I think one doesn't travel in high-level circles without eventually running into some form of intelligence agent. Epstein must have had his share of encounters.

I lean toward him being an asset rather than an agent. Ghislaine? Dunno. She might have been an agent or an asset.

As an 'intelligence asset' he would have done favors for various agencies and they would do favors for him. That makes a lot more sense to me than him being an 'agent' of someone's.

Ghislaine's daddy was Mossad though. She certainly was in her daddy's circles and knew many of the same people he did. Some of that probably translated into her relationship with Epstein.
