CHARLESTON, W.Va. - After a photo surfaced of West Virginia correction officer trainees giving what appears to be the Nazi salute, state officials quickly suspended some employees and the governor ordered the firing of those involved.
The image, showing more than two dozen trainees with their arms raised and faces blurred, was released Thursday by the West Virginia Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety. A line of text reading “Hail Byrd” tops the picture, which an agency spokesman said was a reference to the trainees’ instructor.
Before the photo was made public, the agency’s secretary, Jeff Sandy, released a memo describing the image of Basic Training Class Number 18 as “distasteful, hurtful, disturbing, highly insensitive, and completely inappropriate.” He wrote that the picture “betrays the professionalism I have seen time and time again displayed and practiced by our brave correctional employees.”
Republican Gov. Jim Justice issued a statement condemning the photo and ordering the firing of the people involved.
“This will not be tolerated on my watch -- within the Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation -- or within any agency of state government,” said Justice.

That’s what I thought. Like, How many want their own squad car? I assume most would raise their hand on that question. 8>)

The salute that looks like the Nazi salute is called the Bellamy salute and is a palm-out salute described by Francis Bellamy, the author of the American Pledge of Allegiance, as the gesture which was to accompany the pledge. During the period when it was used with the Pledge of Allegiance, it was sometimes known as the “flag salute”. Both the Pledge and its salute originated in 1892.
Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, Italian fascists and Nazi Germans adopted a salute which was very similar, and which was derived from the Roman salute, a gesture that was popularly (albeit erroneously) believed to have been used in ancient Rome. This resulted in controversy over the use of the Bellamy salute in the United States. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.
Up to that time, it was the practiced salute to the American flag for all American children in public school....

Dumb move. They were making fun of their drill instructor who was probably all over them. So I don’t think there’s anything “pro nazi” in their intentions.
Kinda like, the wife is pushing you to do this, then do that, then do this. So you snap her a nazi salute to poke fun.
Humor that may have been acceptable years ago, but will now cost you your careers today. They probably should have known that.
