Myles Garrett: I made a mistake; I lost my cool

No one was talking about the Browns’ victory but about the team’s star defensive player swinging Mason Rudolph‘s helmet at the quarterback’s head.

“A win’s a win. I don’t think it’s overshadowed by what happened in eight seconds,” Garrett told reporters in the locker room.

Garrett refused to talk about what set him off. Replays showed that Rudolph tried to rip off Garrett’s helmet before trying to kick him.

Why should venue matter with assault?

As a football fan, I say it shouldn't; I'd be pleased to see Garrett spend time behind bars. (Vontaze Burfict too.)

If the NFL wants to get serious they should have him charged.

He should be charged - but I don't think the NFL gets a say. I think Mason Rudolph would have to go to the authorities and formally report the crime and request that charges be brought.

this moment of weakness

He's had several "moments of weakness" just this season. He clearly has a big problem confining his aggression within the bounds of NFL rules, and if he doesn't admit it and address it, the authorities may address it for him - and rightly so.

With the Browns’ reputation for dirtiness, and the over the top severity of his actions last night, I think he should be banned from the league. For life. End his career. The League needs to make a BOLD statement that NOTHING like this should ever happen again. Do stupid things, win stupid prizes.

The closest thing I can recall like this is when Albert Haynesworth of the Titans stomped on the head of a Cowboy player who did not have his helmet on. The Cowboy player ended up getting 30 stitches on his forehead. Haynesworth was suspended for five games. More recently, a player was suspended for 12 games for repeated violations. My guess is that Garrett will get a six game suspension, the remaining games on the Browns schedule.

I watched the game(I’m a Browns fan sadly) and saw it live. I think Rudolph should get a one game suspension for trying to pull Garret’s helmet off, if he didn’t do that none of this would have happened. Pouncey should get three games, Ogunjobi four, and Garret for the rest of the season. No one is innocent in that fight.

Okay.

Speaking as a Non-NFL fan....

If he’s reacting in the moment about the other team’s guy trying to rip of HIS helmet and kicking HIM...

Shouldn’t both of them face degrees of sanctions?

If someone was trying to attack me I think reacting in the moment would mitigate actions.

Yes, both face sanctions....

1970 Raiders Ben Davidson helmet speared Chiefs QB Len Dawson.

Eventually caused a number of rule changes.

".... The League needs to make a BOLD statement that NOTHING like this should ever happen again...."

You mean like the BOLD statement the NFL made in stopping the players kneeling in disrespect for this country before the games?

The NFL is into money-making. Not making bold statements that could jeopardize their franchise.

The NFL will probably suspend the guy for the season or a few games, maybe fine him but he is too valuable on the field to ban for life and end his career.

If Rudolph makes a formal complaint to authorities outside the league, Garrett may have to face some legal consequences, but probably not jail time.

When someone in the private sector makes a mistake, the liberals want their head on a pike, get them fired from their job, end their career, dox all of their family members and ruin their lives forever.

Do we really want to follow the Left's vicious, scorched-earth approach to human frailties? Garret did own up to his part and apologized. He should suffer consequences. But football is a violent, rough game and human tempers can get in the way of professionalism sometimes.

That being said, I don't watch the NFL and haven't for a couple of decades now. But let's not jump the shark on this one incident.

I wasn’t implying anyone was innocent.

Clearly Rudolph tried to yank Garrets Head/Helmet off.. Garret then yanked Rudolphs facemask and yanked him around like a rag doll yanking his helmet off, the other steelers jumped in, Garret swung the helmet and connected, and then got pummeled.

I am not defending or advocating any of it... just saying that the claim that Rudolph “kicked” at Garret before Garret ripped at his helmet is a misrepresentation.

The “kick” was after his facemask was grabbed, and was more of a defensive move to get him away/let go, than an aggressive move as portrayed.

None of it is excusable believe me, and yes had Rudolph not tried to remove Garret’s helmet this all probably would not have happened. However, I suspect this was escalating long before this event, as most things tend to do.

Either way, the NFL should come down on everyone involved... but using past as prologue, I wouldn’t expect it... After all, Pittsburgh has a rapist as its first string quarterback, who had two cops stand outside making sure no one interrupted him as he did it.

NFL is a joke when it comes to actually holding folks accountable for their behaviors.

"...I don’t think it’s overshadowed by what happened in eight seconds..."

An entire life can be overshadowed by an eight second event. Or a one second event.

Haha, too funny. Yeah, like signing Antonio Brown knowing full well he was a scumbag (rape accusations included) only to drop him after the public outcry.

Of course, with Aaron Hernandez, they didn’t really have a choice but to release him what with the handcuffs and all...

You are correct.

But if the NFL were serious, they could have some influence on Rudolph to file charges. That though would paint a permanent target on him from the players perspective.

I am pretty darn sure that Garrett & Rudolph are NOT brothers.

Garrett has a long rap sheet. Time to pull the plug on him.

Maybe he can go fight in the Octagon.
