ALLEGHENY CO., Pa. - The Pennsylvania State Education Association and Sto-Rox School District teachers held a demonstration before a school meeting Thursday night.
They claim 18 teachers have been seriously injured in school this year, mostly from breaking up school fights. Some of them had to be hospitalized.
And they said the district isn't doing anything about the problem.

Teachers said this has been a growing issue since the first day of class, but some school board members said they felt blindsided and attacked.

The solution is for education professionals to grow backbones and stand up and say 'violent behavior is wrong - no matter what race the person is'... and stand by that EVEN if the majority of violent kids are black.
Well, since “paralegals” are legal assistants, I think people are probably just using “para” as a new fancy way to avoid saying “secretary”.

I’ll field that one. In my neck of the woods anyway, a para-professional is a full-time school employee who job it is to assists teachers. In some cases they replace a teacher where a teacher really isn’t necessary.
For example, a hallway monitor would be a para-professional. And so would someone who assists in a special education class. In that latter case, the para would help the kids with routine stuff, like getting their materials organized, etc.
The whole idea of para-professionals is a good one, as they save money for the taxpayers. You don’t need an expensive teacher to monitor a hallway. A para can do the job just as well.
The thing that really irked me is that the church had hired 3 off-duty police officers to provide security for the fair. But they were nowhere to be seen when this pretty substantial brawl broke out. So I was compelled to step-in.
Off on an hour-long donut break I suppose.
The headline almost sounds like it was one massive fight and 18 teachers were hurt trying to break it up. It’s still indicative of the times, though. 18 separate incidents equal a signal that order must be restored.
When I taught high school (30 yrs, BTW), I once broke up a fight in my classroom between two football players. They were otherwise good guys, they just had a football-practice-related grudge. Anyway, they were throwing desks at each other. It happened really fast; of course, I intervened and got my glasses broken. Afterward, they cooled down and apologized profusely to me and to the class. And they pitched in together to get me a new pair of glasses. Those were different times; I think it was in the early ‘90s.
A true statement. They CAN be useful in a situation like this.
However, in my experience with unions (teacher unions and other), the union will make no effort to help the teachers. Injuries? Who cares? The union isn't really there to represent the teachers. The union is there for two reasons: 1) The Union represents the union and 2) The union collects dues and sends most of the money to the DNC.
I would not expect the union to lift a finger to protect teachers from violent students.
Good idea. Either that or go back to what it was like when I was a pup—hit a teacher, get expelled. The next school you attended would be called a reform school.

Some years ago I had to retrieve my step son from the local high due to a medical issue. I entered amid a din that was indescribable. Checking in with the “resource officer” I was hustled aside as two coppers were leaving with one “student” in restraints. I asked the RO, is this a usual. He said no, today is it relatively quiet! This did not occur in an inner city school but one of our better schools in this state. I thought back 50 years and could not equate school in my era to what passes for school behavior today.

I think you miss my point. Yes, unions can create problems. But when it comes to school violence, they have absolutely no impact or influence. All they can do is shine light on the situation from the sidelines.
School violence exists only because administrators turn a blind eye to it. Those guys are rewarded for keeping suspensions low. They are not rewarded for keeping their schools safe.
Side story: I once worked with a vice-principal who was not of that mold. He actually cared about school safety. Well, one day a knife fight broke out in the school. He immediately called the city police (a good move).
The next day this vice-principal got a call from the superintendent. He was told that if he ever called the city police again, he would be fired.
Why? When the city police are involved, it will make the local news. Can’t have that happen!

You pretend to teach.
The kids pretend to learn.
The parents pretend to care.
The school board pretends there is no problem.
It’s not uncommon for some students’ IEP to require a one to one aide.
I would imagine it’s the paraprofessionals who receive the most injuries.

There is a lot of truth in that statement!
I have worked with union officials who were excellent, Johnny-on-the-spot types. If a teacher had a problem, they were at the school almost instantly.
But as you said, many union officials just don’t care. I’ve seen those types as well. Call them to report a problem, and they’re too busy to respond. After all, there is a Democrat fundraiser to attend.
That’s why I was happy to see the Supreme Court recently rule that membership in a teachers union cannot be mandatory. Hopefully, at least some teachers will just walk away from a bad union.
Kids need dicipline. Too bad that is considered “disrespectful”. These kids learn this behavior at home from their entitled parent(s).

Yup. Sort of like calling garbage men “sanitation engineers”.
Senior managers are much more interested in covering up problems than solving them—and then they wonder why young people would rather work for AI machines....
The super is the one who should have been fired.
I lived fairly close to da hood in FL. There was an intersection visible from our front yard and one of the roads lead to a school. At least once a week, a deputy would come flying up with lights and siren on, block the road with his car and jump out with shotgun in hand, stand there for half an hour and then leave. Half the time an ambulance would go by while he was there.
That intersection had a 4 way stop and speed limit was 55 in one direction. Once a month someone would run the stop sign coming from da hood. Heard a big bada boom and someone would either be going to the hospital or the morgue.
Glad to be out of there. Living in rural Ozarks now and haven’t heard a siren in well over a year.
My Teacher friends are not allowed to break up fights - they are required to get an administrator or find another teacher to witness before they touch a student. It does not matter how serious the flight is, the teachers are not allowed to touch a student in any way.
