California has recently voted to destroy the independent contractor status of Uber/Lyft drivers and shift to that of company employees. This is going to be a nightmare for many who find that the results (ie. newly assigned drive shifts, different hours, etc. ) will not be feasible. And Uber management is NOT to blame for this state of affairs. It hopes to reach an accommodation before the law kicks-in on January 1. Yet, since it's prudent to prepare for the worst case scenario and because the state leadership is SO inept, one needs to consider other venues.
Hence, if there is anyone on the forum who has had the experience driving or riding Uber/Lyft outside California and can provide info. (eg. Tyler Texas is not good, too small, and too many drivers; wait time in Houston for a morning ride is about ten minutes; San Antonio is a perfect locality for Rideshare) your informed input is quite welcome.
Screwed in Sacramento has a new meaning....
....really a mean meaning.
I just Love these california stories, and I love this idea!
Afterall, they Voted for totalitarianism so GOOD!
Frankly, I hope they force Uber to use only Rickshaws, pulled by transgender vegan atheists.
All the gov wants is for you to have withholding paid each pay day. They don’t trust you to pay estimated taxes as a contractor.
In California the main way of getting around might soon be hitchhiking.
“Frankly, I hope they force Uber to use only Rickshaws, pulled by transgender vegan atheists.”
Is that anyway to talk about the vegans?
Hmmm. Rickshaws and muffin stumps. Might be a business opportunity here.
CA workers comp $$ will choke them to death...
Now the companies will be liable to every single accident and passenger injury claim....Then throw in sky high CA workers comp expenses....
It also has to do with Uber/Lyft/Doordash providing health insurance.
Many of these new tech companies are run by very liberal Democrats. I wouldn’t be surprised if the Uber and Lyft CEOs are both Democrats. These idiots give all this money to lunatic liberal candidates and get the predictable results - except it wasn’t predictable to them. Yet somehow they’re able to run large enterprises.
Will employees be given company vehicles to drive or will they continue to use their own, often unsafe vehicles that lack maintenance? And who will pay for all the maintenance?
You will but uber miles on your car.

I’m president of a community orchestra here in California. We also have Independent Contractors/ any soloist, supply musician we hire for one concert and a rehearsal, etc. They want everybody to be an employee so they can scrape off part of their salary for their very stupid state spending.
There are plenty of us conservatives here. Just that there are more libs, more illegals, and so much graft and corruption. I call it The Occupied Territories.
The Gigs Up for Freelancers
The new law was pitched as a simple measure to provide contract workers with benefits like sick leave and health care. Yet as the dust clears, many ugly details are emerging. There were lots of carve-outs: for doctors, lawyers, accountants, psychologists, insurance agents like Jake from State Farm. But heres something weird: Freelance journalists are limited to 35 submissions a year per putative employer.
Like many independent contractors, I prefer not to be hired as an employee. I dont want to attend company picnics or sit through mandatory sensitivity training. Shouldnt I have the ability to choose? Apparently not in California, a job-destroying wrecking ball. On a more serious note, many disabled people or parents with young children would rather work freelance from home than trudge to an office. Retaining more workers directly will send employers costs up, up, up. Uber, Lyft and DoorDash are spending about $30 million each to fund a ballot initiative to kill AB 5, but votes wont be cast until November 2020. Ugh.

I understood this decree as being critical to have gig workers become employees. Only employees can unionize...
Anyone who is cheering this does not have a CLUE how this will impact the cost of goods coming to your door in the near future. Many companies depend on independent contractors (ie. owners/operators) of their own trucks, NOT OWNED by a large corporation, to get goods shipped across our country, from sea to shining sea, If this law stays as it is, costs to the consumer, will increase necessarily. There is such a small profit margin on this already. It will either cost more or things will take longer to get from a warehouse to your door.
And coercive unionization.
