There's a good chance you hallucinated this week without ever knowing it

In the 1950s, researchers stumbled upon a new class of drugs that provided relief for those suffering from schizophrenia. These drugs were known as antipsychotics and, as the name suggests, they reduced symptoms like hallucinations and delusions — primarily by reducing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This led clinicians and scientists to argue that dopamine was linked to the experiences of psychotic symptoms, and a concerted research effort ensued, seeking to solve the puzzle of why excess dopamine might produce hallucinations.

Although it was later shown that increasing dopamine could produce hallucinations, establishing a consistent link between them, it has not been clear why.

They achieved this by taking advantage of a simple fact: Your brain is lazy. It makes shortcuts to understand the deluge of information that bombards it daily. If you’re presented with consistent information, consistently, your brain adjust its expectations of reality in turn. This is the basis of Bayesian theories of how we perceive the world – that is, the brain makes inferences about the world around us based on statistics and probabilities on what is likely to occur.

[I]ncreasing dopamine made it more difficult for participants to adjust their perception — an effect comparable to how the hallucinators had struggled. Moreover, the extent to which participants struggled was strongly associated with the severity of hallucinations — but not with any diagnosis of schizophrenia. In other words, the difficulty appeared to be associated with a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Using brain imaging, the researchers also showed that an increased capacity for dopamine release, from a part of the brain known as the striatum (an area involved in schizophrenia), was associated with the severity of hallucinations. Together, these experiments showed that excess dopamine was associated with difficulty in accurately predicting reality.

"We have a lot of potato soup right now. They can learn to love it!"

Anything that can be improved by oregano or parsley is just crying out to be experimented with.

I admittedly never cared for potato soup.
I’m sure it can be made to not be super bland.
But just like getting nailed with food poisoning from soft tacos makes you swear off soft tacos, getting hit with a bowl of “dust soup” didn’t do any favors.

We have a lot of potato soup right now. They can learn to love it!

And when they complain about the potato soup run it through the blender/food processor and rename it mashed potato soup..

And I found a rodent sleeping in my under-the-sink electronic rodent motel.

He was dead tired..

It’s already mushed, but parsley would be a good idea.

Add bacon to your potato soup. I always slice it into 1/4” pieces, saute’ them until they are slightly crisp and toss them and the bacon grease into the potato soup. If there’s no bacon in it, it just tastes like plain potatoes.

And what a kitteh it is, too! Every time I see one of those sweet little floofs, I think of what the coloring will be like when the kitteh is full grown. Some, in my minds eye, are spectacular, like this one!

Good morning.

When I was in Henderson, a mosquito got in and bit me on the neck and wherever else it could find a patch of skin that wasn’t covered by a blanket. Once again, there is a mosquito in my place and this one chooses my left hand, wrist and forearm. And I have nothing to stop the itch. I thought I had something like a cream of some kind, but nope.

I’m also out of honey, and who can drink herbal teas without honey?

Seems an odd time of year for a mosquito.

It was odd in Vegas, too. But I saw the little wuzzer a week or so ago, and tried to kill it, but to no avail. So I’m paying for it. My body is so allergic to insect bites, that at one time, I had to have an injection of adrenaline to keep me from going into shock. I have nothing even close to that, now.

Maybe your complex needs to clear standing water somewhere.

It rained here last night. We have Envirothon all day today, and then everyone will get to eat potato soup (with ham!) again, especially *sigh* the person who told me to make it.

We have several small lakes around here, so I’m sure that’s where the mosquitoes come from, not to mention the swimming pools.

Its all good, now, though. The Benadryl Wannabe cream is within reach. ;o] (Five bites in a 3” area.)

I’m thinking of putting the whole family on Austerity Rations as a Learning Experience.

Maybe give him some cash at the beginning of the week and say, "You can pick your own lunch menus for the whole week as long as it doesn't cost more than that." Then again, he might be good at that. If you do the actual purchasing it could be more work for you.

Well, I’m back and Happy Friday.

The attendees at the presentation said they learned a lot. Now if they can remember it when they next need to use it. But they know how to contact me.
