In the 1950s, researchers stumbled upon a new class of drugs that provided relief for those suffering from schizophrenia. These drugs were known as antipsychotics and, as the name suggests, they reduced symptoms like hallucinations and delusions primarily by reducing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This led clinicians and scientists to argue that dopamine was linked to the experiences of psychotic symptoms, and a concerted research effort ensued, seeking to solve the puzzle of why excess dopamine might produce hallucinations.
Although it was later shown that increasing dopamine could produce hallucinations, establishing a consistent link between them, it has not been clear why.
They achieved this by taking advantage of a simple fact: Your brain is lazy. It makes shortcuts to understand the deluge of information that bombards it daily. If youre presented with consistent information, consistently, your brain adjust its expectations of reality in turn. This is the basis of Bayesian theories of how we perceive the world that is, the brain makes inferences about the world around us based on statistics and probabilities on what is likely to occur.
[I]ncreasing dopamine made it more difficult for participants to adjust their perception an effect comparable to how the hallucinators had struggled. Moreover, the extent to which participants struggled was strongly associated with the severity of hallucinations but not with any diagnosis of schizophrenia. In other words, the difficulty appeared to be associated with a symptom, not a diagnosis.
Using brain imaging, the researchers also showed that an increased capacity for dopamine release, from a part of the brain known as the striatum (an area involved in schizophrenia), was associated with the severity of hallucinations. Together, these experiments showed that excess dopamine was associated with difficulty in accurately predicting reality.

Thank you for your discretion.
The county says we can drink the water again, but DP, who is super into his Emergency Preparedness Merit Badge, is holding on to 25 gallons of purified water, Just In Case.
I don’t blame DP for keeping 25 gallons of water. He could keep another 25 and it would be just fine with me. Especially because of the condition my own water is in. I don’t think I have 25 gallons but that’s only because I can’t store it. ;o]
Cats actively try to take over.
Tripping us near stairs and trying to crush us under their mighty weight as we sleep.
Have a good weekend, y’all.
It is true.
Those red walls are super out of fashion.
Morning Kitteh is color coordinated with the kitteh post. Clever camoflage.
Good morning. I’ve decided I need a sourdough starter so I found one here:
https://www.kingarthurflour.com/recipes/sourdough-starter-recipe
Which also has instructions for drying it for storage (vacation, sending to friends elsewhere, etc.) and printed that, too. Now I need to find a decent crock for the starter. I still have a lot of sourdough recipes for pancakes, donuts, cakes, etc., so its not like I would have to look hard.
And I am so glad! If I never see another red wall in a home, it will be too soon!
I used to keep a sourdough starter to make cinnamon rolls, years ago when we ate cinnamon rolls. I made them for all the church events.
Now, I take fruit salad!
I might have choir practice later (10:30). Waiting to hear if the Bishop has called off everything. An email from the church yesterday said he was going to decide last night.
Lots of that going around, but it’s better than overwhelming the available First Responders and hospitals. I don’t like it, but it is what it is, and I’ll deal with it.
Finding a crock is a mission impossible.
Oh, I agree. If closing everything for a couple of weeks keeps the infection rate manageable and saves the lives of those who are most vulnerable, it will be worth it.
I'd just like it to be decided!
You can use a glass bowl with a lid, or a glass bowl covered with plastic wrap.
I just opened the back door (north) to let Jake in, and the wind went Whooosh!
Such beautiful color.
Eventually, it has to go into the fridge and I don’t like things with open tops in the fridge. I’m too clumsy because of the arthritis in my hands and the neuropathy in my fingers.
Since contracting CFIDS, I’ve had to learn how to make my life as stress-free as possible. That including countering any chances of accidents, like knocking something over in the fridge and having a large mess to clean up.
So there it is. My life in a cracked nutshell... ;o]
That happens a lot around here, but no Jake to let out.
I just went to Walmart and at the hour when the parking lot is usually empty of all cars but the employee’s, there were at least 30 of them. Inside, I was met with a LOT of empty shelves. Not just toilet paper shelves but bread, condiments, lunch meat, and on and on.
Panic buying. One of my nieces took issue with a post I made on FB about panic buying, misunderstanding it for buying in bulk. *facepalm* This girl is learning a lot from her ol’ auntie!
