There's a good chance you hallucinated this week without ever knowing it

In the 1950s, researchers stumbled upon a new class of drugs that provided relief for those suffering from schizophrenia. These drugs were known as antipsychotics and, as the name suggests, they reduced symptoms like hallucinations and delusions — primarily by reducing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This led clinicians and scientists to argue that dopamine was linked to the experiences of psychotic symptoms, and a concerted research effort ensued, seeking to solve the puzzle of why excess dopamine might produce hallucinations.

Although it was later shown that increasing dopamine could produce hallucinations, establishing a consistent link between them, it has not been clear why.

They achieved this by taking advantage of a simple fact: Your brain is lazy. It makes shortcuts to understand the deluge of information that bombards it daily. If you’re presented with consistent information, consistently, your brain adjust its expectations of reality in turn. This is the basis of Bayesian theories of how we perceive the world – that is, the brain makes inferences about the world around us based on statistics and probabilities on what is likely to occur.

[I]ncreasing dopamine made it more difficult for participants to adjust their perception — an effect comparable to how the hallucinators had struggled. Moreover, the extent to which participants struggled was strongly associated with the severity of hallucinations — but not with any diagnosis of schizophrenia. In other words, the difficulty appeared to be associated with a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Using brain imaging, the researchers also showed that an increased capacity for dopamine release, from a part of the brain known as the striatum (an area involved in schizophrenia), was associated with the severity of hallucinations. Together, these experiments showed that excess dopamine was associated with difficulty in accurately predicting reality.

My computer changed itself. The clock in the living room is analog.

Some of the timeindicatordevices here did not require changing. Things like my alarmclockradio, the computing devices, and the programmable thermostat changed themselves. My auxiliary timekeepingthing - an older clockradio that hides over on my printer supporting device - automatically does the time change thing but it's on the 'old' April - October schedule for DST so it changes on the wrong date now. The phones get their time signal from the phone company and the time will reset once we receive an incoming phone call - so far today no one wants to talk to us so the phones are still on EDT.

Other devices did not require changing since they stayed on EST all year like Mrs. NoC's clockradio and my fake grandfatherclock wannabe.

I set the kitchen hanging-on-a-nail-in-the-wall clock before I went to bed. Someone already reset the clock on the nuking device but they didn't reset the clock on the range. I'll get to it eventually when the time discrepancy annoys me enough.

In the meantime, it's not even 4pm and the sun is behind the trees to the west...

It’s still light here, a little. I had a lie-down with Jake after church, but now I’m back and prepared to cook.

The poster at Good Morning Kitten said he had to get a new piece of pie.

6:00 p.m. and it’s full dark here. Welcome to Standard Time.

Look at that tiny little Floof!! I heart dat fing!!!

Good morning. Laundry is done, but its another one of those mishap days. I checked the clothes in the dryer after 15 minutes and forgot to push the button to turn it back on again. *sigh* So when the timer alerted again, the dryer was almost timed out. The towels were still damp. The sheets in the other dryer were mostly dry, but here I am, doing some facepalm things.

Going back to MST was very difficult for me this time. because I was an hour late with my pills, it was after 2030 when I was finally able to drop off to sleep. *groan*

I wish the Powers That Be would just leave it alone this time.

What’s the point of being a Power if you can’t muck around with everyone’s clocks?

And good morning! The cats say to go back to bed.

What’s the point of being a Power if you can’t muck around with everyone’s clocks?...

When I'm Queen of the World, I'll leave the clocks alone. I may mess with other things, like the Stupidity of Glob Al Warming, and make it a crime to even suggest its man-made, but not with the clocks.

Happy Monday, everyone.

For some reason everyone is in to work early today. I wonder why?

I actually forgot the time change yesterday. I woke up naturally, looked at the clock, got out of bed, showered, started eating breakfast, saw an article about the time change, but by then I was too awake to go back to bed.

There’s a part of me that would like moving to a 4:30 - 9:00 schedule.

I’m on my same clock-time schedule, but it’s light earlier.

Is it OK if I cancel today?

My brain seems to be functioning at somewhat less than its best. I have to make the bed, but not right now... It can wait.

Your bed will still be there later. Mine had a catball.

Sure. There's a good chance you're hallucinating it anyway.

In keeping with the Monday morning laundry stimulus, I put in the first DVD of the Series 21 version of “Midsomer Murders.” What in the world were they thinking??

Have they run out of good writers? Were they trying for some levity by spoofing private girls’ schools and tossing in vintage race cars for a bit of atmosphere?

I’ve been trying to stay interested in this thing, but I think picking the lint out of my rug would have more bite to it. *sheesh*

I think I’ll go put another sheet on the bed, and then fill some pillowcases with pillows.

You may be closer to the mark than you think with that statement! The Time Change Orcs took my brain and replaced it with mint jelly.
