Free republic is not using the secure https format, why not?

My browser url for FR shows a not secure connection. Has FR let its Internet certificate expire or is it not using the https format? We users enjoy this site but want the security of https.

You do realize that it only “sends a request” to the site to use HTTPS “if available” right? If it is not available from their end, or there are any 3rd party API scripts that don’t support HTTPS you are still wide open.

I’m using the Chrome browser which shows “not secure” up in the url line. if other users show secure or https, maybe it’s my Chrome, I am using the current ver. of Chrome. I’ll try the suggestions above by bk1000, thanks.

The NSA may not need to “crack” anything. If the company you buy the product from is an Intel Front they could slip assembly language code in there that would cc them everything. I suspect that would be extremely hard to find.

It takes enormous processing power ($) to maintain thousands of TLS connections concurrently.

Donations are secure.

Been using Nord for a couple years, before that HideMyAss.

Seems to be working ok.

Only a fool would use a Free VPN.

ALL router manufacturers, chip makers etc. would need to be in on it. When the WH can’t stop leaks you think the millions of people that would be involved would stay mum? None of them would be for sale and would sell the secrets to black hats? I call a big nope on that. Is the backbone tapped? You bet your sweet bippy. Is it easy to decrypt RSA 2048? Not till Quantum Computing grows up.

Agreed, an HTTPS Certificate would cost all of 25 dollars. These means basically all traffic is being sent in clear text, possibly even your passwords/cookies while you sit in starbucks ...

Free Republic needs a good app. It would also be nice if we somehow can organize better in local/regional groups that I have seen in the past. I wonder how many Freepers were at the July 4th. celebration with the President? At any rate, our side needs to organize/mobilize better.

IpVanish is not free. I agree, free VPN’s are data collection and resale operations. Make you marginally more secure doing transactions but privacy... LOL. I want what you are smoking if you think it is actually free and they are not selling all your activity.

Nord is expensive and I have no clue about log retention. HMA I don’t know about but they are smaller but I assume don’t keep logs.

Simply add the s to the http and FR is secure. It runs on 80 plain text but also on 443 encrypted. I assume the 80 is for the folks getting on here from TRS 80’s and Sinclair 1000’s.

BFG.

The real problem is unencrypted DNS queries. Your ISP sells your DNS history. As long as you are on a VPN and it is a good VPN your DNS queries are also encrypted and bypasses your ISP and are not sold.

It is a real worry for me since most of my queries are to midgetporn.com

OMG, I just checked and internet rule 34. It exists.

Well that joke won’t be used again.

The browser Opera comes with free VPN, I have not checked for logging though. Nor have I installed either. Does anybody now who the VPN operator is?

I was getting the “not secure” message myself, on Safari on a Mac. I tried conservative98’s method from post #4, and viola! No “not secure."

It doesn’t matter. Nothing is free, nothing. If you haven’t learned that yet, I don’t know what to say.

Nord has no retention other than what is being used. I read it on the internet so it must be true.

All your posts are public anyway, no real need for encryption except maybe on the log-in screen. For logging in just make sure that you use “https:// “ on the URL.
