What type of murder was she convicted of? I can’t find it in any of the media stories. 1st degree, 2nd degree, some other form of homicide?

Just plain murder.

I haven’t seen anything about that, either. They did say she faces a sentence of anywhere between five years and life, which is a hell of a spread. I doubt it was first degree murder, but could very well have been second degree. In any event, she’s going to prison, and deserves to.

Texas doesn't have degrees of murder. Murder is murder. It can be classified as capital murder under circumstances where the death penalty is warranted.

Not sure, and not familiar with Texas law, my take is race was not a factor, the jury pegged her as a liar, was pissed, and gave her the max option.

In Texas, the charge is either Murder or Capital Murder.

At sentencing, the defendant can argue that it was a crime of passion which could lead to it being treated as a second degree felony.

Capital Murder has to have other aggravating items. These include killing a police officer or fireman, killing during a kidnapping, burglary, or sexual assault and so on.

Should have been manslaughter, based on what I have read. But murder? No way.
