DALLAS - A former Dallas police officer who fatally shot an unarmed man in his apartment was found guilty of murder by a Dallas County jury on Tuesday.

Guyger was off-duty but still in uniform after a long shift when she shot Botham Jean, a 26-year-old accountant from the Caribbean nation of St. Lucia. Murder carries a sentence of five to 99 years. The punishment phase, which will start Tuesday afternoon, will determine just how long her sentence will be.

Cheers erupted in the courthouse as the verdict was announced, and someone yelled "Thank you, Jesus!" In the hallway outside the courtroom where Guyger was tried, a crowd celebrated and said "black lives matter" in raised voices. When the prosecutors walked into the hall, they broke into cheers.

What I want to know is, who is the idiot who thought she’d be an assert to the Dallas Policy Department, and hired her in the first place?

Like Dirty Harry said, “That’s a hell of a price to pay for being stylish”.

Also lets not forget she could get as little as only 5 years, which means she could be out in a lot less time than that. For murdering an innocent person in their own apartment for their multiple major fuch ups.

Not nearly fitting if its that small. and dont think it couldnt be that small given she’s a cop and female and cried on the stand.

ANOTHER affirmative action hire DISASTER.

Amber gave this man NO OPPORTUNITY to 'surrender' or 'submit'. She just walked in and shot him dead because she "was scared".

Sad story but I hope her sentence is lengthy. She'll probably get 30+ years, jury decides. I'm thinking a toxicology test on her was FALSIFIED TO BE CLEAN and she was either drunk, stoned, or whatever but NO WAY was she sober.

She had to be convicted. However, was a manslaughter conviction an option? It seems to me she was negligent when she opened fore at a man who did not seem to me to be threatening her. She thought he was in her apartment, yet he had no gun. She ought to have taken a moment to gather her thoughts and not opened fire against him.

He was totally innocent. She did not premeditate this event. Wasn’t Second degree or Man Slaughter an option against her?

Just asking.

I’m actually a little bit surprised. I thought murder would be a tough sell...

She killed someone during the commission of a crime. That's murder in Texas.

I'm pretty sure that if I walked into what I thought was my apartment and EVERYTHING LOOKED DIFFERENT, I'd quickly realize I'd walked into someone ELSE'S apartment!

I don't care what her toxicology test revealed, SHE'S EITHER BLIND, DRUNK OR STONED.

She should've IMMEDIATELY RETREATED!

“””What I want to know is, who is the idiot who thought she’d be an assert to the Dallas Policy Department, and hired her in the first place?”””

Amber Guyger is 5’3” in height.

Only her gun made her powerful enough to become equal to the big, bad dudes she would face as a police officer.

There are logical reasons why people of small stature should not be employed in certain physical jobs.

“It fits because of the fact she was in the process of committing a felony (violation of 30.02 - which is a state jail felony) and death occurred. She entered a habitation illegally - thus committing a felon”

How?

She had been on duty at the police station from 8am until 9pm and the shooting occurred at 10pm.

So unless she was sneaking into the evidence room and sampling the candy stored there, she was most likely stone sober.

Texas doesn’t have 2nd degree murder. If you intend to kill someone and it is not legally justifiable - ie, self-defense - then it is murder. If you murder while committing a crime, it is “capital murder”, which is more severe than “murder”. She has been convicted of the lesser murder charge. She WAS trying to severely injure or kill the man and had no valid reason for doing so. In Texas law, that is “murder”.

Not a lawyer. That comes from reading some lawyers websites about murder in Texas.

Thanks, thats why i was using some different terms, each state has unique terms so was trying to approximate /find the somewhat equivalent meaning.

As someone who has not followed this case, could you please give me (and others) the facts as to what happened. Did she truly mistakenly go in the wrong apartment? Was there any connection between the deceased and Miss Guyger? The key in the door? How could she mistake the apartment? Thanks.

I have been around those who do not use it properly and they’re nuts. Any of these prescription drugs can be abused.

She walked in. Just before she shot the homeowner.

She is a cop. She couldn’t have pulled that loaded gun, snuck into where she suspected the “intruder” was, pointed the gun at him and tell him to “STICK ‘EM UP!”?

I always keep my doors locked when I am in the house alone as I am an older female and been hearing about a lot of criminal break-ins while the owner was in the house.

Still, the guy did not deserve to die. He was sitting on his couch eating ice cream for God’s sake.
