Jimmy Page was interviewed for a cover story in the latest issue of Uncut, where he talks about the potential of a LED ZEPPELIN film, career regrets (or not), and carrying on the legacy of ZEPPELIN as the best band in the world.
Speaking to writer Michael Bonner about why he feels no other bands could come close to LED ZEPPELIN, Page said: "It's really hard to say something like that and not sound conceited, but over the years, a lot of other musicians have told me they thought we were the best. I'm not talking about record sales or concert attendance, although I think we can hold our own with anyone. What I mean is: when you talk about a band as a collaborative musical unit, we were the best. I am not talking about one or two genius songwriters, and everyone else tagging along. I am talking about a collection of musicians who are each at the top of their craft in their own right. In LED ZEPPELIN, we were exactly that."
Elaborating on why he previously told interviewer Charlie Rose in 2012 that LED ZEPPELIN was the best band in the world while Robert Plant demurred, Page said: "If you are a young musician and you want to hear how a band works well together, then we're a pretty good blueprint. John [Paul Jones] and me. Robert and me. John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Every combination of the quartet could bring something special. Robert probably said, 'Oh, well, there were a lot of great bands,' to that interviewer because that is the gentlemanly reply. And I agree with him...But when you are talking about rock 'n' roll alchemy, I had to say what I thought. We were the best."

Never much of a Zeppelin fan in my youth.
Now in my older years I realize that there never was and never will be a band that created music anywhere near them.
IMHO the only 90s band worth seeing these days is Radiohead, they’re all great musicians, especially Phil Selway on drums.
If you ever get a chance to see Alice In Chains live, I highly recommend you go. Yes, Layne is dead but Duvall is almost the same voice, he’s not on drugs, and he’s quite good. I saw them in 2010 and they were excellent, and their new album was outstanding. They’ve matured from the grunge days, and frankly Jerry Cantrell is probably the best guitarist out of that genre.

AMEN. No one even comes close. I had the pleasure of seeing them perform in Houston in 1973
I’ve seen lots of concerts by lots of people over the years, but that concert topped them ALL. IN SPADES 5TH

Pete came into his office with a broken hand from a misplaced windmill motion that landed on the side of his Telecaster. Dad put on a cast that would allow him to play out the rest of the tour, which lasted another month or so. Didn’t stop him from windmilling either.

Great story! My understanding of the circumstances is that Pete punched a wall after the San Diego show and broke a few bones in his wrist. Despite the success of the band that year coming back from the Cincinnati debacle and Pete’s own solo album Empty Glass, Pete was in bad shape because of his drug issues.
I saw The Who for the first time a month later in Toronto and noticed no ill effects. 37 years later to the day, I saw them for the sixth time and they were still rocking.
Page did a lot of overdubbing his parts to get that “full” sound. Listen to “Dancing Days” for example. How many guitar parts are in that tune?
I love John Paul Jones, but Jimmy Page is the most over rated guitarist ever...total slop! I think John Bonham became the most over rated drummer due to the drugs and booze!
everyone overdubbed- its par of the reason Queen was fractional in concert versus their album (i saw Queen in concert 4x in the late 70’s early 80’s)...Zeppelin live took the songs to another level.

If you haven’t, I urge you get “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” the book I wrote with Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge. It’s not just a bio of him, but a history of the era.
One thing that I discovered in the research was that the politics were NOT cut and dried with many of these people. They all leaned left. But Jeff Airplane absolutely refused to do ANY Dem fundraisers as a sellout. Pete Townsend knocked Abby Hoffman off the stage at Woodstock with his guitar. Jack Bruce was a conservative and got into bloody fights with liberal Ginger Baker (Or maybe I have that backward). Hendrix himself, a paratrooper, savaged Euros in 1969 when they questioned him about Veetnam. He said “You didn’t mind when we came over here to save your ass!”
Most of them were Mercedes Marxists. The Beatles had no problem working with the military junta in Greece to secure an island. They ALL carped about taxes. Sure, many like Springsteen, David Crosby, and Don Henley sang a lot about leftist crap, but there are questions about Springsteen being pushed into it by his management; Crosby is a total hypocrite, busted on gun charges, and so on.
