JIMMY PAGE: Why LED ZEPPELIN Was The Best Band In The World
Blabbermouth ^ | September 19, 2019 | N/A

Posted on 09/19/2019 4:53:59 PM PDT by DoodleBob

Jimmy Page was interviewed for a cover story in the latest issue of Uncut, where he talks about the potential of a LED ZEPPELIN film, career regrets (or not), and carrying on the legacy of ZEPPELIN as the best band in the world.

Speaking to writer Michael Bonner about why he feels no other bands could come close to LED ZEPPELIN, Page said: "It's really hard to say something like that and not sound conceited, but over the years, a lot of other musicians have told me they thought we were the best. I'm not talking about record sales or concert attendance, although I think we can hold our own with anyone. What I mean is: when you talk about a band as a collaborative musical unit, we were the best. I am not talking about one or two genius songwriters, and everyone else tagging along. I am talking about a collection of musicians who are each at the top of their craft in their own right. In LED ZEPPELIN, we were exactly that."

Elaborating on why he previously told interviewer Charlie Rose in 2012 that LED ZEPPELIN was the best band in the world while Robert Plant demurred, Page said: "If you are a young musician and you want to hear how a band works well together, then we're a pretty good blueprint. John [Paul Jones] and me. Robert and me. John Paul Jones and John Bonham. Every combination of the quartet could bring something special. Robert probably said, 'Oh, well, there were a lot of great bands,' to that interviewer because that is the gentlemanly reply. And I agree with him...But when you are talking about rock 'n' roll alchemy, I had to say what I thought. We were the best."

Agreed, to an extent... Zappa was the best musician in terms of pure talent alone but Zeppelin had a group magic that none other could match.

Having listened to every Floyd album thousands of times since I became a fan in 1976, I recently came to the somewhat surprising conclusion that Animals is their best album.

DSOTM and WYWH are masterpiece albums. Pure perfection. And no one loves Meddle more than I, but, dang, Animals is so complex, so deep, so amazing in every way.

Dogs may well be the best rock song of all time. Really.

You should really see Robert Plant’s comments about GvF...

The ClASH - Live - they were the only band that mattered.
Love Floyd ‘69-’71 pre-Darkside. Zeppelin - probably the most overrated band in Rock’n Roll.

Maiden - probably the best performers on the planet.

I was at Live Aid 1985...what passed as Led Zeppelin that night was absolutely awful. I mean, bad. So bad that Zeppelin wouldn’t authorize their performance to be released on the Live Aid Box Set. But at least I can say I sorta saw Zeppelin. By contrast, seeing The Who do Quadrophenia in 2012 was a borderline religious experience.

<< Zappa without Beef ain’t right >>

I’ve been listening to a lot of post-Trout Beef lately, and much of it is outstanding. Definitely underrated. Van Vliet was an insane genius. And he could play blues harp with the best of ‘em.

Your covered the most of the creme in your categories. For me the zenith of the music was the entire ‘Nam era and maybe a couple years beyond.

<< the Moody Blues for safely shepherding me back to earth on many occasions when I needed that soothing music to ponder as I rearranged the chessboard again >>

American Beauty worked well for that purpose as well.

Reminds me of how bad I looked with long hair. And it wasn’t as long and dopey looking as that. Glad that I only had it for a few years, and grateful that the worst of the photos were destroyed before the internet came along.

(John the baptist and Samson were sworn to the vow of the Nazarite: no hair on their head was ever to be cut. That included facial hair. Jesus was not under that vow, and very likely had short hair and beard)

Most of the music of those years no longer moves me either. I guess partly because of the fact I don’t care to listen to singers that scream into their mic.

A good concert online? Glen Campbell and the concert with the South Dakota symphany.

“but Zeppelin had a group magic that none other could match.”

I’d put the Stones over Zeppelin in that category myself.

If you sent me back to 1970 and told me I’d have an opportunity to attend ONE concert, I’m going to see the Allman Brothers. At the Fillmore East in New York City. It’s not even something I’d have to think about at all.

I will always pull out Child in Time and Strange Kind of Woman off Made in Japan to listen to. Gillan’s vocals, Blackmore’s solos, Paice’s drumming — classic rock.

I can’t count the times me and the boys drove around listening to that album.

That said, The Who would be my pick for all time rock group.

What is "screaming" to you? Hard to understand garbage? Telling people about how you hate your life (not you Zuriel)? Because there's singing loudly which can be considered screaming.

Saw Led Zeppelin 1969 in Maryland at Merriweather Post Pavilion.
They opened for The Who. Both were great.

This has to be satire or some kind of joke. The Beatles are and will be in perpetuity the GOAT. Period.

Well, if you just want to have some fun, go to YouTube and look up all the various covers for AC/DC’s song “Thunderstruck.” That’d be a pretty cool tribute album to one song and the band that created it all on its own!
