This evening, I flipped over to the Newsmax Channel and started to watched what I soon determined was the documentary film, Waco: The Rules of Engagement. I had seen it in the theater when it came out in 1997, and what I planned to be just a few minutes to catch a bit of the program turned into 2.5 hours.

Why do we often witness tragedy and senseless deaths during the second half of April? The list of violent events that occurred during this time period is simply staggering. Here are some of them:
- April 19, 1993 – Waco Massacre: An FBI assault lead to the burning down of the compound of a sect named Branch Davidians, killing 76 men, women and children.

The Oklahoma City bombing was timed to coincide with the Waco anniversary. And it’s unclear whether the Columbine shooters timed that attack to mark Adolf Hitler’s birthday or possibly Waco.
Is there something about this time of the year that makes these types of attacks more prevalent?
For an answer, CNN spoke with Robert Blaskiewicz, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. He teaches a course examining conspiracy theories and runs a blog, called Skeptical Humanities.
CNN: Is there any evidence or are there any theories that suggest attackers are more likely to strike around this time of the year?
Robert Blaskiewicz: I have seen nothing to suggest that anything about April itself makes people violent.
That said, the reason why we see certain types of political violence in mid- to late April is because of a few unhappy coincidences: that Waco happened to fall on the anniversary of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the first battles in a war against a tyrannical oppressor.
For many people who labor under the idea that the federal government is a tyrannical foreign oppressor like the British monarchy, Waco symbolizes a war of a government against its people.

The ill-defined “they,” whether referring to the U.N., CIA, international bankers, Jews or interdimensional shapeshifting reptilian space aliens living in the hollowed-out artificial moon (yeah, it’s a real one), really seem to me to be a secular version of religious mythology.
On the other side, when you are already convinced that agents are working to manipulate world events, people tend to seek out information that reinforces what they already believe.
It’s a tendency called confirmation bias, and it is a sort of perceptual filter for what you accept as evidence.

What stuck out to me as I watched the breathless wall-to-wall coverage of Qanon on major networks that don’t usually pay attention to that sort of thing was that anchors and reporters looking into it were flabbergasted that people could believe this stuff. But the older conservatives who are latching onto this conspiracy theory have been trained to believe something almost exactly like this, the story of the Second Coming of Christ as laid out in Revelation and interpreted by premillenarian Christians.
When I say premillenarian Christians, I’m talking about the religious perspective that led to the Left Behind series, the novels that are based on an interpretation of the book of Revelation where humanity has to go through a Tribulation, along with the associated wars and suffering at the hands of the Antichrist, before Christ’s triumphant return. When he returns, he will separate the sheep from the goats in one great act that resolves history, leading to his thousand-year reign. This form of Protestant eschatology is the predominant form among American evangelicals. Because the Bible is supposed to be the inerrant word of God, the faithful scrutinize Revelation and try to match characters and events to the world, essentially reading Revelation as if it were a newspaper. The list of April events is uncanny. I chalk it up to high unholy days for the cabal. Twenty years ago I started noticing that April was bad. We were told it was copy cats of Columbine but that never quite fit and always bothered me. Knowing what I know now, it makes perfect sense.
