An NFL team has offered womens soccer star Carli Lloyd the chance to become the first woman to kick in an NFL preseason game, after she drilled a 55-yard field goal at the Eagles training camp.
Why the NFL would put a woman in a position of being injured is anyones guess.
Lloyd uncorked her kick after being invited to the Philadelphia Eagles training session last week, and video of the kick went viral, Fox Sports reported.
This week, Lloyds trainer, James Galanis, noted that the soccer star had been approached by several other NFL teams to play for them in a preseason game.
The one that called today, I dont want to say who it is, was willing to put her on the roster for their next (game). They were willing to put her on the roster, Galanis told Fox Sports.
However, that deal may not occur. She was told (she could) play on Thursday, the NFL game, but she is playing Thursday with the national team, so that was the conflict, the trainer added.

Is there a rule about #steps or yards?
Nope. She can start running from the goal line if she wants IIRC.

OK... You’re right. I’m oblivious. What can I say? I will have myself beaten with a stick (if that will suffice). Although I’m not old enough to have been under a rock that long, I guess I have been living under a rock too long. Pisses my off though, that I’ve had to pay so much property tax to live under a rock.. Just not fair!

They could probably find a tranny that could kick even farther. Sign a guy who thinks hes a girl. Dont have to worry about a chick getting injured... win/win

So what! a 55 yard FG is not something to brag about if that is her maximum, it is expected from real NFL players. Put her out there, like they did in golf, and see how she does in real life.
Maybe they could move the line of scrimmage forward by 15 yards if they use a female kicker. If she gets touched in any way by a male player, the will get a 15 yard penalty and will be charged with sexual battery. The sexual battery will remain in effect regardless of the handicapped yardage.

Didn’t Texas State have a female kicker in 1991? I believe her name was Lucy Draper.

I wouldnt go that far. Last year kickers hit about 60% from 55+ yards. Only 15 kickers had kicks that were good. Under 5% of all attempts were from that range.
My team, only attempted one from that distance all year. On many occasions teams will call it four down territory and go for it rather than take a shot from that distance.
Anybody who can boom a kick from 55 should at least get an invite to tryout.

That would be the final straw for the NFL. That's what I was thinking.

Not trying to pile on. But
here is a cool story about how foreign-born soccer-style kickers revolutionized the position.
To: dirtymac
Oh please, as already attested by other poster, 55 is NOT “expected”. It’s hoped for. Distance is not the question but accuracy.
Go to the Ravens for SUPER kickers from that distance AND accurate. Justin Tucker is the greatest, and predecessor Matt Stover was one of the greatest if not in his time.

That would be 100% of any player in MLS (United States soccer league if you don't know).
Problem for the female and a lot of MLS players is that the run up, before the edge blockers get to the point of contact mind you, requires that kickers must take 1 1/2 steps of momentum to kick the ball before the edge rushers block it.
Not many kickers can kick the ball with accuracy using 1 1/2 steps. The lady required at least a 6 step run up to build enough momentum. Most men MLS players require 2-3, some can do it within 1 1/2 steps which is why not a whole heck of a lot of people can make a NFL field goal in regulation from 55 yards away.

100% agree with you. When I saw the video where she started over 5 yards behind the holder I noted that wouldnt fly.
She did leave me wanting to see more. Id love to see what she could do using a normal approach.
Id venture to guess that there is a reason we didnt see 20 other kicks using the correct number of steps.
To: sphinx
Certainly seems so.
Good post, thanks.

You cant waste a spot on the roster for Just a field goal kicker.
Some teams can, and have kicking specialists. Usually the punter is the backup for field-goal and kickoffs, but not always.
The question is “can she do it, and still protect herself?”
