Full Title: Set Your Air Conditioning to 78 Degrees During the Day, 82 Degrees at Night, Federal Agencies Recommend
Looking to beat the heat without breaking the bank? Energy Star, the federal program run by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy, has some tips — but you might not like them.
Energy Star recommends that, in order to reduce costs and energy usage, you should set your thermostat as high as comfortably possible through the summer.
Specifically, they say you should set your thermostat to 78 degrees while you’re home.
Spending the day out? Turn that thermostat up 7 degrees to 85.
Then, when you finally hit the hay, the federal program recommends setting your thermostat to 82 degrees.
They add that, if you’re using a ceiling fan, you can even turn up the temperature another 4 degrees without losing any comfort.

In an effort to further encourage energy conservation, SCE's tiered rate plan now includes a state-mandated high usage charge, which is applied to energy usage that is greater than tier two, or 400% of the established baseline. Baseline is determined by the area you live in, the season, and type of space heating. In your most recent bill, your energy usage was very close to exceeding the kilowatt hours within tier two. If you want to, or are able to use less energy, we are here to help offer solutions....................."
One of their most common "solutions" is to allow them to put a device on our A/C unit so they can shut us down WHEN THEY ARE most distressed in supplying electricity during hot weather.
California. The State of challenge just to live here.
Before I got married I slept with the window cracked about an inch with the heat shut off to my bedroom all winter long.
Half a dozen blankets on me.
I slept great.
What if California deported several million illegals living in the state? That would save lots of water.
Only a matter of time before your thermostat is set remotely by the DoE.
In our hot and sweltering southern heat, our air conditioner is set to 75° 24/7.

” I fully support installing a ceiling fan in every room. “
Why ?
Best buy of the year.
Well yes. It will drop to 75 around midnight. We keep windows closed during day. Open them late at night. One reason I never want a one story home.
I bought a small 25 watt Turbo fan for $14 in lieu of a ceiling fan. Love it and can move it around.

Yeah. That’s what we do.
Mine is at 71! Perfect!
If you are 90 years old and weigh 100 lbs., this probably isn’t bad advice.
But for the rest of us, I want the temperature the way I want it.
And I have the money to pay for it, I’m going to spend it on a cold AC.
