My IRA account calculates my required redemption and cashes out that amount once a year. It’s automatic. Then I take out additional funds to ‘use up’ the space remaining before federal taxes are triggered. Those funds, to a large part, go into the index fund to get higher returns -— and risk -— than if I left them in the IRA.

I have finally gotten to finish reading the posts on this thread. I always like to read retirement threads as the comments are so interesting and informative. Advise is something to be considered and experience also goes a long way to helping those already retired as well as those looking forward to the reality of providing for themselves without the usual paycheck. We took early SS so we could be free to do things while still young and able. Never have regretted that choice. More money would not have made us live differently as we have always been happy doing with what we can afford and avoiding debt. Best to chose a location which is affordable, the US is a big place for finding what suits anybody. Own your home and pay cash for everything. Do not buy what you cannot afford. There are those who do not have to consider cost and those, like me, who have our limits. Granted, we have always been happy with a low key life of peace and privacy and the rest is gravy. Also, we have been and are physically busy and watch our health and diets in order to remain independent. Your circumstances will improve over time, all lives have setbacks and hanging on to the past is an impediment to future happiness. I am sympathetic to your present situation and I wish you good things for the future.

I would never retire to another country where my gringo skin is in the minority.

That other country is moving here.

Apparently in Spain it is not too much :)

hang tough amigo. That is my takeaway from this thread. That, and FReepers really do care about each other. The latter is a great takeaway.

Used to be the case, not anymore.

It is generally not awarded if the other party has means to support themselves and from what I understand the absolute max is ten years and is capped at like 20% of earnings.

Get a good shyster, preferably a nasty female version and a 50/50% split of community property will probably be the extent of it.

”This is a depressing thread...”

Not really.

It is enlightening. I am rather certain that I will never leave the USA and as well assured that money is not everything.

Getting a divorce right before you plan on retiring is basically always a pretty bad idea ...

I'm surprised (could have missed a post) no one asked if you are Christians or another religion. Find a way to reconcile with your wife. What God has joined together, let not man put asunder.

Patched things up.

It was damn dicey and we established new “rules of the road.”

A guy can only be pushed so far. She saw she had crossed that line.

She must love me since she was the one who apologized :)

I almost missed this comment.

Very good to hear your new status and I wish you luck.

The "cheaper to keep her" rule applies here. Sounds cynical but so true. Many men have had to learn to live on much less during their much deserved retirements as a result of divorce. It's always cheaper to live as a couple.

Marriage can be made to work if both parties are able to give each other space. That's an important factor most wives don't appreciate. Men need their space! When my wife and I downsized into a condo, my main requirement was that I still have a room to myself where I can read, listen to the music I want, etc., and have my own space. If we had to share the same space all the time, we would drive each other crazy!

how did that work out? I'm having a similar issue. Though she isn't apologizing.

I did the apologizing. Never seen her so upset with me before this. She wants me to play the covid games. Masks and not saying anything when other people get the injections. We're compromising by moving out of California to Missouri (table rock lake area)(far less idiocy.) I guess I have to still keep my mouth shut and dipper on only when a sign is posted.

being a rebel this will be difficult. Though I really like her it would suck to lose her.
