The forbidden string is “8”, “c”, “h”, dot, “n”, “e”, “t”
That can’t appear as a link, plaintext, obfuscated link, etc. There is an IP address that hooks to the under-construciton site, and that detail is forbidden information here, no doubt.
At this point, I think the strings 8chan, infinitychan are not objected to. They, like my punctuated expression above, ID the site but don’t provide a URL that can be cut and paste.
If the string 8chan is forbidden, lordy. Plenty of news articles use that string recently. Here is a CNN article, for example, that has “8chan” in the body of the article.

Before posting an image from there, please look to see if the image displays the text of one or more identifiable 8ch links - those have been deleted in the past. As always, image (and text) posts must not use an 8ch link in the html code posted to FR.
At this time, that website is being (falsely) portrayed as Klan central and we don't want Free Republic to be falsely portrayed that way too. And we REALLY don't want to exhaust the mods who work to protect FR from those kind of accusations. ThankQ.

I can tell you from experience, some moderators view plaintext as grounds to delete posts. The fact that the official rules repeat “links” does not tmean the rules are enforced only against links. Post 544 in this thread was deleted for plaintext of the forbidden to be expressed partial-URL.
Regarding that tweet by Mark Penn... Pe Resists needs a nap or a job that keeps him busy. :O

It’ll be interesting to see if your post is allowed to stand. It instructs how to view the forbidden web site, but the effort to “get there” is considerably greater than just clicking on a URL, or doing cut and paste of plaintext.

All I know is, whatever we think the rule is, some moderator will see it differently. Not a big deal, just the way it is.
As for the string “8chan,” it’s ludicrous and pointless to ban based on that. That is the non-URL term commonly used in hundreds of news reports.
