Stupid American Center Aisle (in the Box) Diet
Ask Me How I Know!
Endocrinologist M.D.s have been prescribing up to 50,000 IU of V.D (Cholecalciferol) to diabetic patients since the early 1990s. They were far ahead of the curve.
John Prendergast, M.D., of Palo Alto (now retired) had such great success in halting and reversing diabetic symptoms that he virtually stopped recommending patients for surgeries (which brought him accusations of betrayal from one of the three surgeons to whom he had previously sent patients!).
As a nutritionist, I met several people who were pleased with his treatments, and I attended one of his lectures, and spoke with him afterwards.
Dr. Prendergast had been so successful that he had long been a physician to Hollywood celebrities and English royalty. I was told by one of his patients that he received at least one award for having the highest success rate in treating Diabetes in the entire USA (97% recovery rate, as I recall).
He got into the specialty because his father and other male relations had died very young from cardiovascular disease, and his own health was declining dangerously by the time he reached his 30’s. He was his own patient.
The general protocol he described to me was to cycle people between 10,000 and 50,000. The main proviso was to avoid any calcium supplementation above 40,000, as it might promote hypercalcemia.
I used to sell 10,000 IU and 50,000 IU V.D supplements. I kept the 50,000 hidden, so that people would not mistake it for 5,000, and so that I could make clear what certain M.D.s like Dr. Prendergast recommended.
(NB: I am not a doctor, and I did not make prescription. The above is my recollections from various conversations and readings from years ago.)
P.S.
As of 2017, when I left the field, 50,000 IU V.D did not require a doctor’s prescription. I myself sold many bottles of 50K to many people for many years.
I did not leave it out on the shelf, and I informed such customers of the recommendations, but it was entirely legal to sell such supplements to the general public.
I was legally allowed to disseminate nutritional information, as long as I did not make prescription.
I worked in the natural foods nutrition industry, specializing in supplementation, for about 25 years.
High doses of Vitamin D3 also helps slow the growth of advanced prostate cancer. I have metastatic prostate cancer and take 10,000 iu twice per day. Five year survival rate is about 50%. It will be five years for me in two month. I also take several other supplements. I figure anything that wont hurt me is worth taking.
Not claiming that is why I have responded to treatment extraordinarily well, every case is different, but my oncologist told me only a few patients have done as well as Im doing.
Taking 10,000 iu of D3 may very well help prevent prostate cancer.
I finally convinced my elderly mother to take vitamin D3, only after one of her friends started taking it. I’ll keep a copy of this for her.
My endocrinologist prescribed Vitamin D, 50,000 IU, once a week. I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 20 years ago, and still take oral medication, and watch my food intake. My A1C has been within normal range for quite a long time now. I also have hypothyroidism, and hyperparathyroidism, which causes my body to produce higher levels of calcium. Other than taking the parathyroid out, there isn’t much that can be done about it. And so far, my doctor hasn’t recommended that. I go for fasting blood work every 6 months.
Is this another way to say that being sedentary and never getting out in the sun can increase the risk of developing diabetes?
