GILROY, Calif. (Reuters) - A California teenager was identified by police on Monday as the gunman who killed three people, including two children, at a food festival south of San Francisco. Santino William Legan, 19, cut through a fence at the festival on Sunday evening and shot at people with a “AK-47-style” assault rifle at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, Gilroy Police Chief Scot Smithee told reporters. Within a minute of opening fire, Legan was fatally shot by three onsite police officers armed with handguns. “It could have gone so much worse so fast,” Smithee said, noting the festival, which takes place about 30 miles (48 km) southeast of Silicon Valley, America’s tech hub, welcomes thousands of visitors.

It is interesting how words have meaning. California has defined assault rifle to a semi-automatic rifle with certain cosmetic features. Washington State has defined an assault rifle to be any rifle that is semi-automatic.
I wonder truly what kind of rifle it was. Probably a semi-automatic rifle that has a California-legal 10 round magazine and that has certain cosmetic features that makes it look somewhat like a MAK-47 or similar former soviet block rifle.

Unless you significantly modify an SKS it is not an assault rifle even by the California definition. No pistol grip, no detachable magazine, Magazine limited to 10 rounds or less, no collapsible stock, etc.

Remember! That gun, regardless of make and model did not kill or harm anyone. The person carrying the gun killed or harmed those people.
As we are now seeing in Britain where the guns are totally banned, that more and more knives and machetes are being used. The problem is not the implement but the person and the ilk that manipulates him (Democrats are evil hateful people)

I took a Chinese made SKS off of a Viet Cong prisoner once.
It didn’t look that well made. That was in early 1970.

I think they are fairly accurate and reliable. I wouldn’t know though because I bought 500 rounds with it (in the mid-90’s) and I still have 460 rounds left.
In other words, this guy is simpatico with the New Zealand gunman.
And CA’s politicians are calling for more gun laws there; or everywhere I guess.
