Her best-selling book and the racy TV series it inspired taught a generation of women that they could ‘have it all’.

But Sex and the City creator Candace Bushnell, 60, has admitted that she regrets choosing a career over having children as she is now ‘truly alone’.

The TV series starred Sarah Jessica Parker as a writer in New York who famously chooses her independence over motherhood.

I feel the “female empowerment” culture has raised generations of women that are basically just “me me me”. One only has to think this through but they’re so short sighted. They believe they should “f**k who I want when I want” and be the “successful” career woman so everyone will say how “great” you’ve become.

Once you realize it’s not all as it’s cracked up to be it’s too late. You get one shot at these decisions, now she’ll only get lonelier and lonelier. It’s an epidemic, I have a family member that has made these choices. She has risen to a good position but one that provides very little mobility - few jobs like hers. If she loses this job she’ll have a hard time finding another. Now past child baring age she has few options in life. She’s stuck. What a horrible place to be.

There are indeed women and men who are not suited for Parenthood. In my opinion if they recognize that it’s probably a good thing.

In this woman’s situation she’s looking back on her life and realized how little of value she has actually contributed to the world, though she doesn’t recognize it as that.

It is not children that she misses, it’s friends and relationships with people that she has contributed something of value to. People who will miss her when she’s gone, people who will be able to say that their life is better for having known her. Takes a lot more than popping out babies to be that kind of person.

"...and be the “successful” career woman so everyone will say how “great” you’ve become."

Exactly. The same is true of men who put career ahead of their family, and is true of anyone who puts career ahead of becoming the best human being they can be. Everyone eventually dies. What do you want your life to be about? I've seen too many people 'of stature' come and go, and be forgotten (after some fawning retirement dinner of some sort). If you haven't built a personal life, and given love and help to people, you will be very lonely when the spotlight is turned off you and onto someone else.

So your grandmother said “No. I wouldn’t get married. I’d join the Army.” ?

Then you wouldn’t have existed.

Is she saying she wishes none of her children or grandchildren existed?

The show was entertaining. It was funny. But the happy ending they stuck on to it where they all end up happily married in their mid to late 30s after having taken on a football team’s worth of guys previously......uhhhh no. Not remotely realistic. Sorry. Men value youth. Greatly. There’s no sense in getting angry about that. It’s not “society”. It’s not “images in the media”. No amount of political will or attempts at browbeating is ever going to change that. It’s biologically preprogrammed by millions of years of evolution.

Knowing that fact, act accordingly. If you want a good guy who will be devoted to you and who wants to have a family with you, get him in your 20s. Your bargaining power and the odds of you getting what you want only go down from there.

The hard cold fact is, guys aren’t interested in how successful a woman is in her career.

I don't think she minded us existing, but do I think her unhappiness is justified by the fact that I am one of the results of it?

my dtr can't have children and her husband is several yrs older coming from a dysfunctional family with a mother who was a zealous Jehovah Witness.

so he was never a big proponent of having kids anyway....

...I do worry about loneliness for her, especially if something happens to her hubby...

She could have just birthed them, then turned them over to a nanny. Mommy sees them 2 hours a week, when they are clean, fed and happy, nanny raises them.
Never even have to change a diaper.
I actually had someone brag on their daughter who is a ceo with a full time nanny.
At least she didn’t do that. .. We get the benefit of her gene pool ending with her.

If she’d had kids, she’d regret not pursuing her career. The grass is always greener. Only difference, she wouldn’t write a book about that.

Many women successfully have both career and children.

Very true. I know plenty of older women who are pretty happy with how both their families and their jobs have turned out.

You also don't have to be alone in late middle age, even if you haven't married and had children. You can have friends or a close relationship with family members. You can even get married in your 60s or older.

Don’t know about the actual book, but the show was basically 4 women playing the roles of gay men.

I am sure there are exceptions, but if a person has been single and never been in a serious long term relationship (sharing the same living space) and is closing in on 40 or over 40, odds that they will be able to engage in the selflessness that a long term relationship requires, is low indeed.

When you have been solo that long, you are generally too set in your ways, and used to doing whatever you want whenever you want, and answering to no one, to deal with the reality of the selflessness that is required.
