California Sues Sacramento-Based Charity That Sends Care Packages to Troops

The lawsuit alleges the charity Move America Forward invaded the privacy of injured veterans by using their names and stories to solicit donations without their permission and falsely claimed to have a partnership with the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. "Our troops and their commitment to our country should never be exploited in deceitful solicitation gimmicks, but unfortunately they are," state Attorney General Xavier Becerra said Wednesday.

The lawsuit alleges the charity violated IRS rules by providing free office space for the political action committees Move America Forward PAC and Tea Party Express.

The charity also is accused of using charitable Becerra said federal rules ban charities from backing political candidates.

Move America Forward said the organization has always been completely transparent and provides proof of tax filings and independent audits on its website.

Becerra said charity directors Salvatore Russo and Shawn Callahan also operated several separate for-profit entities that charged fees for marketing and other services provided to Move America Forward.

For example, a Russo-owned entity called The Campaign Store LLC intercepted online donations and charged fees ranging from 7.55% to 10.06% to transfer the remaining funds to the charity's bank account without adding any value to the transaction, the lawsuit says, calling it a vehicle to "skim" off a percentage of donations.

The attorney general said the lawsuit seeks to remove Russo and Callahan as directors and ban them from operating charities in California. Becerra said his office will pursue further penalties but that they wouldn't be criminal because it would be hard to prove intent.

Agreed - the whole “we’re protecting the servicemen whose names were wantonly abused for a cheap cash grab” to cover that this is lawsuit is a purely political attack - like Obama did with gibsun guitars.

Weapnozing the government - supposedly why Nixon was going to be impeached and the Dems claimed it was evil.

I remmeber then they first got started, I think in the SF Bay Area, about 15 years ago.

They are —or at least were, I’m sure they still are— a great group of people.

Their original start was opposing Clinton stuff, esp when Bill came to raise big bucks in Silicon Valley.

Sounds like they’re getting railroaded, this must be BS.

California makes it hard to do business here. Of course, everyone already knows that but it extends to charities and companies trying to help charities. I started a new for profit business to work for charities. Partnered with one of the biggest charities in the U.S. out of Washington DC. When discussing our contract with them they couldn’t believe the regs we have to work under. I emailed them a copy straight from the AG’s (Becerra’s) office. The following phone call my contact said....their rules are ridiculous, they don’t want your biz to work.

In California? Probably both.

Yes, this was/is an awful attack by the Left. It started with a hit piece by Kim Barker of the George Soros-dark money funded group, Pro Publica.

The investigation began with Kamala Harris who was at the time the Attorney General of California, and then picked up by her left-wing Democrat successor.

Move America Forward has shipped over 450 TONS of Care Packages to U.S. Troops serving overseas, even when others, including the liberal media, forgot about the service of our troops serving overseas.

As others have said, no good deed goes unpunished. Whether it is President Trump, Brett Kavanaugh or now Move America Forward, we've seen what happens when liberals obtain political power - they use it to persecute and prosecute Conservatives and it is a despicable evil.

God Bless Move America Forward, Melanie Morgan and Howard Kaloogian. They are doing incredible work and deserve total and complete vindication!
