Two Lane Blacktop was like an American attempt at a French existential film. Pointless. Nothing happens. Nothing resolved. Just a non-descript day in the life.

I normally can’t stand movies without a bonafide story per Aristotle, to wit — a defined beginning, middle, and ending. I don’t care if it is drama, suspense, action or comedy. Just pure, unstoried character studies do nothing for me. Two Lane Blacktop was like watching paint dry for me.

Ive tried to watch it a couple of times and never made it to the end. All these years I thought I was missing something. I guess I did get it and it really was just crap all along.

I should add that all these protagonists who are futiley searching for meaning are all secular characters who have no moral or religious framework for them to find meaning. Good little leftists at heart. Anything goes. Do your own thing. If it feels good do it.

It is actually a very accurate portrayal of why these liberal hippies can’t find any meaning to their lives beyond themselves and their immediate gratification. In that way, Easy Rider is a mirror for secular leftists and liberals. How do you find meaning to life without God involved in some way, shape, matter or form, let alone at the center of your existence.

Good luck with that.

JOE: "So on the day that Christ rose from the dead, they're out there groovin' and screwin'."

What was the point of that? I guess Leftists then, as now, feel the need to profane the things of Christ and God.

Fonda was extraordinarily fortunate to be drinking/smoking buddies with Hopper and Nicholson.

One of the luckiest men in Hollywood, ever.

Both Hopper and Nicholson were emerging GIANTS, while Fonda was a never-has-been. Without any talent whatsoever.

The restaurant scene in “Five Easy Pieces” - is that the one where Nicholson just wants some toast? That is a great scene. I just happened to see it on youtube a few nights ago. In my memory I thought it was a scene from Easy Rider.

Although I think there is a scene at the roadside cafe with Nicholson and Fonda, etc.

The point was that Joe was upset about the behavior of hippies on Easter. Joe was a blue collar guy who was not a leftist.

“From what I’ve heard, that scene was totally unscripted and the stuff they were smoking was real. Feels like it.

They were high as a kite.

And the scene is one of the funniest ever captured on film.

The stunning butter-stick scene in Last Tango in Paris came as a surprise ... to the actress. Brando went at it for real.

Did I miss it, or did they get through that whole thing with no mention of Phil Spector, as “The Connection”?
