Not to spoil your summer pool fun, but outbreaks of "crypto," a swimming-related diarrheal illness, are on the rise, according to a new report.
From 2009 to 2017, there were nearly 450 outbreaks of crypto (short for cryptosporidiosis) reported in the U.S., which resulted in more than 7,400 illnesses, according to the report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). What's more, outbreaks of the illness which is caused by a hardy parasite called Cryptosporidium increased 13 percent per year over the eight-year study period, the authors said.
Cryptosporidium causes profuse, watery diarrhea that can last up to three weeks, according to the CDC. The parasite is the leading cause of outbreaks tied to recreational water use, such as swimming in pools and lakes. The organism is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive even in chlorinated water for up to 10 days or more.
People can become infected with the parasite after swallowing contaminated water from swimming pools, lakes or rivers, the CDC said. Among the 444 crypto outbreaks reported from 2009 to 2017, 35 percent were tied to exposure to treated swimming pools, the report found. These outbreaks tended to peak in the months of June through August.

what movie is that, so I will avoid it.
Suprised that the video was not banned from YT.
You could use Laz’s stick...
“Cedar Rapids.”
A guy I know is in the hospitality industry and has been in charge of hotel and resort pools. He once told me nobody would ever get in a pool if they saw the tests and the stuff he has seen. I haven’t been in one since. Chlorine doesn’t kill everything.
Those are also the people who always show up to the in-ground fountain areas that squirt streams of water - and from what I’ve heard, that water recirculates - disgusting. This is why we can’t have nice things.
Something I have never understood about public pools...
You can jump in the water and pee all your want, but you can’t stand on the edge and pee into the pool.
I heard the DU has a brand new thread about that...
...down the streetm to the left....
Many years ago, I was at a public pool/amusement area where everyone was required to shower first and there was a pool of germicide you had to walk through barefoot to get to the swimming area.
So THAT’S what made my eyes burn so bad in the school pool at Tatum, New Mexico back in 1960! the school blamed chlorine. Believe it or not, back then New Mexico had great schools!
Carlsbad schools, at that time, simply sent everyone to the Pecos River to swim.
So, pee in the pool or hot tub -> chlorine smell.
Years ago I was in Honduras on vacation. I was poolside laying in the sun when I saw a little kid standing on the edge of the pool peeing into the water........LOL!
Cryptosporidium Attenuation across the Wastewater Treatment Train: Recycled Water Fit for Purpose
...sent everyone to the Pecos River to swim.
THAT was better...just natural fish and animal urine 24/7/365 ;)
For SA WWTPs, those oocysts remaining within the secondary treatment-clarified effluent were proportionally more infectious than those in raw sewage.
So, those buggers that survived secondary water treatment were more potent? Um...
Can we please move on to restaurant buffets now?
Crypto is the parasite that killed so many gay men at the beginning of the AIDS crisis. Sheep get it......a farmer was asked what he does when his sheep get Crypto and he said we shoot them.
PS-Crypto invades and kills when your immune system is compromised.
Clean your butt before entering pool. Simple.
