Planet is entering ‘new climate regime’ with‘extraordinary’ heat waves intensified by global (T)

Simultaneous heat waves scorched land areas all over the Northern Hemisphere last summer, killing hundreds and hospitalizing thousands while intensifying destructive and deadly wildfires.

A study published this week in the journal Earth’s Future concludes that this heat wave epidemic “would not have occurred without human-induced climate change.”

The alarming part? There are signs record-setting heat waves are beginning anew this summer — signaling, perhaps, that these exceptional and widespread heat spells are now the norm.

In the past few days, blistering, abnormal heat has afflicted several parts of the Northern Hemisphere, including major population centers.

New Delhi, India’s capital, soared to 118.4 degrees (48 Celsius) Monday, its highest temperature ever recorded in June. Some parts of India have seen the mercury eclipse 122 degrees (50 Celsius) in recent days, not far off the country’s all-time high.

It will always be record warm somewhere so these stories can be churned out until there is no further interest in the subject. But average temperatures are only creeping up very slightly, so the actual impacts are smaller than claimed.

Higher temperatures in places like India and Pakistan are not that surprising given the rapid growth in population and urbanization. The urban heat islands are fuelled not only by human energy use but also by changes in the surface albedo, as formerly green spaces become paved.

I think the truth lies somewhere between the alarmist global warming theory and the “sun only driver” camp which fails to understand second order variations. The sun is not the only driver of temperature trends, it depends on air mass distribution, changes in the circulation. But the sun’s contribution is large and right now is somewhat negative compared to the period 1981-2010 which forms the basis of our “normal” climate.

It’s interesting also that cloud cover has increased due to jet contrails. Where I live, the sky today would be almost 100% clear in this weather situation fifty or a hundred years ago, but instead there is about a 20-30 per cent high overcast from old contrails that have spread out (I am watching them doing that, not just a guess). Those can reduce the temperatures slightly although it’s probably not much of a factor overall.

According to Wiley Online Library, Earth's Future is a “transdisciplinary,” “open access” journal. In other words, Daffy Duck could write an article and get it published there.

The anti-science “scientists” who make this sh** up should be beaten with their worthless dissertations and made to wander the country in sack cloth pleading for forgiveness. What nitwits.

People in Chicago almost froze to death during that last global warming in winter.

One big question (or two): What caused the last ice age -and- what caused it to end? Global warming in both cases??

exceptional and widespread heat spells are now the norm.

Every bit of weather is now the “new normal” until the next bit of weather is the “new new normal”. After Katrina, we were told that the new normal was the US mainland getting hit with 5 or 6 major hurricanes every year. In reality, we weren’t hit by a single hurricane for about a decade after Katrina.

This is one of the coolest Junes I can ever remember, from 1957-today. It should be around 98 right now with a 70% humidity.

It is in the low 80s.

.
There is absolutely no question; we are in a massive cooling phase, and the sun is definitely providing less energy presently.

Same in Arizona - it’s been averaging 10 degrees below normal. I’m afraid the Californians will find out and start a mass exodus. :)

Yeah, that is why it is 63 degrees in lower Michigan, in June. It is cold and wet.

"More wildfires means, really, that the jihadis have discovered another way to destroy stuff.”

Don't think we can blame the recent rash of wildfires on the Mohammedans, at least in the States. Decades of mismanagement of the state and national parks have led to a build up of underbrush and deadfall that waits for the perfect condition to break out.

Blame the Gaia worshippers, not the followers of the Pedophile Moon God.

the greens took over in the 1980s

Forced the ForestService to quit logiging

No roads built because there was no logging

Now we cannot access the remote areas

The head of a National Forest is like a dictator

What ever he say goes

And if there is no logging his job just got a whole lot easier

And the Midwest is unusually cool and wet this year.

Variations happen. It is neither strange or unusual.
