Temperatures leap 40 degrees above normal Arctic Ocean, Greenland ice sheet see record melting (tr)

Ice is melting in unprecedented ways as summer approaches in the Arctic. In recent days, observations have revealed a record-challenging melt event over the Greenland ice sheet, while the extent of ice over the Arctic Ocean has never been this low in mid-June during the age of weather satellites.

Greenland saw temperatures soar up to 40 degrees above normal Wednesday, while open water exists in places north of Alaska where it seldom, if ever, has in recent times.

It’s “another series of extreme events consistent with the long-term trend of a warming, changing Arctic,” said Zachary Labe, a climate researcher at the University of California at Irvine.

And the abnormal warmth and melting of ice in the Arctic may be messing with our weather.

Data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center show that the Greenland ice sheet appears to have witnessed its biggest melt event so early in the season on record this week (although a few other years showed similar mid-June melting).

40 degrees above NORMAL takes into account that it’s summer and the sun is overhead. That is WAY above normal for any place in the planet, but especially a place that has a high albedo.

There is zero debate the earth is warming. Those who deny it are idiots and look foolish. HOWEVER-there is also zero debate we are coming out of a severe cooling cycle called LIA and the cause of the current warming trend is most likely cyclical (solar related) AND there is zero debate the earth has been warmer in the relatively recent past (last 4000 years). Those who attribute the current warming trend to anthropogenic causes alone fall into two categories: idiots and liars. The liars are indeed doing it because of an agenda-not so based on money-but Agenda 21. I say all of this as a 32 year professional meteorologist.

I saw a thread here on FR recently that mentioned a new study which claimed the glaciers in Greenland are GROWING in size.

April and May: Above average, but nothing to write Nome about https://nsidc.org/greenland-today/

“June 12, 2019
Surface melting on the Northern Hemisphere’s largest mass of ice began during the second week of April, with several significant melting episodes at the end of the month and into early May. Warm conditions over the ice sheet and winds from the east were prevalent for the two-month period. While significant, and above average for the 1981 to 2010 reference period, the melting extent has been comparable to previous years spanning 2010 to 2018.”

“It was unusually warm over nearly the entire ice sheet relative to the 1981 to 2010 reference, notably over the northern half of the island, where temperatures were more than 4 degrees Celsius (7 degrees Fahrenheit) above average. Over most of the island, this still means conditions were well below freezing, but along the western coast and southeastern coast, temperatures rose to the melting point frequently.”

A lot more at the link. “Nothing to write Nome about”

Unfortunately, your predictions will be accurate.

President Trump is the last hope, that we can turn the climate terrorists away from destroying our country and planet by funding things that will never happen.

Here in Northern Californicator, we had one of the wettest and coldest winters on record.

For about a week we had some record setting heat, earlier this month.

Now, we are back to normal June weather, cloudy and overcast in the mornings and cool, like now 51 degrees and an expected high of 74.

Chilliest late spring, early summer I can remember in my state of Maryland.

Same here in Colorado. Coldest March on record. Cold and rainy all of May. Last frost was June 10th. (I'm at 7,600 ft. but that's still quite late)

Here is my response to that sign in Glacier Park.

---------------------------------------------------

The idiocy of the whole thing is written in the text on this sign. They admit that the "small alpine glaciers" did not exist 7,000 years ago and formed because of the "Little Ice Age" which ended about "1850."

It also references the Big Ice Age, without naming it such, as the Pleistocene Era (AKA the Glacial Period as opposed to the Inter-Glacial Period that has existed for the last 12,000 years) when the serious glaciation existed from 130k years ago until 12k years ago. IOWS the "small alpine glaciers" of the "Little Ice Age" are the anomaly not the disappearance of them. A lack of glaciers is the norm for an Inter-Glacial period.

I don’t what we’re going to do! Climate change is out of control...the temperature is 50 degrees hotter than it was just 5 months ago!

We will all be dead by November.

“the extent of ice over the Arctic Ocean has never been this low in mid-June during the age of weather satellites.”.

And if you watch Deadliest Catch you'll know that last winter sea ice in the Bering Sea formed earlier and came south faster than they've seen in 20 years.

Neither situation is abnormal in any way.

There is zero debate the earth is warming.

If it weren't warming we wouldn't say that "the Little Ice Age ended about 170 years ago." That wouldn't make sense.

So that’s where all the warm weather went.

Well-duh. Yet I will see post after post saying the globe isn’t warming or mocking climate change. The problem I have is that people fail to make the distinction between climate change and AGW.

The word “climate” has change built into it. It is by nature just an average of extremes. You have long term and short terms averages. The climate is ALWAYS changing. But ignorance of this issue is found on both sides of the debate.,,and THAT was my point. There are a lot of people who rightly disbelieve in AGW that mock climate change, not understanding that you can mock the first and scientifically accept the second. The first is hogwash, the second is natural and is ALWAYS occurring.

This is the genius of the AGW crowd. They have created a false correlation. People think the two terms are interchangeable. They are not. I think it’s just as important to take back the proper terms about climate change as it is “gay” and “pride.”

The writers (propagandists) are again wrong. Perhaps deliberately wrong, but wrong nevertheless.

Loss of sea (from the assumed “correct” sea ice 30 year average of 1980-2010) is “assumed” to mean much more heat is absorbed into the Arctic Ocean because the average albedo is reduced when sea ice melts away.

And that does happen. But only for 5 months of the year: From mid-April to mid-August, yes, more sea ice loss means (slightly) more heat energy is absorbed into the newly-exposed dark Arctic Ocean.

But Arctic sea ice loss is a year-long difference from those earlier years! The sea ice anomaly remain very nearly the same from December to February to April to June to September to October.

And, loss of sea ice for 7 months of the year means significantly MORE heat energy is LOST from the Arctic Ocean to the infinite darkness of space than is gained in 5 months of summer. To repeat: Over the course of an entire year, less Arctic sea ice means more heat loss to space from the Arctic Ocean.

Work in something for 32 years, be in the top of the field (Freep mail me and I will email you my awards), and then listen to constant ignorant dribble from people who don’t know s$&t from shinola-who try to tell you about your business and we’ll see how you post. Let’s take a look at your polling history and see if you have any windmills you take a swing at now and again. I’m willing to bet there’s been a thing or too one MAY say you’ve been wound a little tight over. You probably didn’t think so-but others probably did. Guess it was OK because it was you though. Must be nice to be in charge of the universe.
