Pete Rose: Johnny Bench would never have made it to Hall of Fame 'if I wasn't born'

Baseball legend Pete Rose took a shot at his former teammate and Hall of Fame catcher Johnny Bench on Thursday during an appearance on “The Brian Kilmeade Show.”

Rose fired back after Bench refused to budge from his view that the former Cincinnati Reds star should be excluded from the Baseball Hall of Fame for gambling on the sport in 1989.

“It don't bother me but you know Johnny Bench is one guy who should thank God I was born,” Rose told host Brian Kilmeade. “Because he never would have made the Hall of Fame if I wasn't born.”

Kilmeade asked Rose to elaborate.

“Because I'm the guy he knocked in a thousand times. You got you've got guys in front of you guys right behind you and you got to be responsible for everybody else involved,” Rose said, adding that Bench couldn’t understand why he wasn’t as loved as Rose was in Cincinnati.

I’m not opposed to the idea, but by the same reasoning, why shouldn’t Shoeless Joe Jackson be inducted?

He was widely known to be seen at the Garden State Race Track and Atlantic City Casinos (among other Phillies).

Slugging percentage is the end-all, be-all stat

OPS is. Slugging + on-base percentage.

Rose's OPS is pretty low at .784 by HOF standards.

That is partly because he hung on so long.

Nonetheless, he had more hits than any other player and that makes him a HOFer.

How bizarre of a post to which to respond.

Odd that you don’t see it my way, right?

+Rose had a Hall of Fame worthy career.
The only guys in the Hall with offensive numbers as mediocre as Rose are there for their defense, having played SS, CF, 2B or C. Rose started at 2B but moved to OF and 1B eventually because he wasn’t good enough defensively. No other 1B has stats as bad as Rose. (He would have been a DH in the AL... if he could hit better!)

+Bench benefited from having Rose hit in front of him.
FALSE! Rose was below average, compared to other people hitting in his spot in the batting order.

+Now that MLB has got in bed with organized gambling it is somewhat hypocritical for them to keep Rose out of the HOF for engaging in an activity they now actively promote.
TRUE! He should be kept out because his only noteworthy accomplishment was playing seven years after he should have retired.

“It is pretty silly to exclude the all-time hits leader from the Hall of Fame. “

There are many here who believe the Electoral College is an outdated concept, too.

They can bash Pete all they want, but he was a winner. World Series rings, division championships. Played the game the way it should be played. A few of his stats; “By the time he retired as a player in 1986, Rose had a record career total of 4,256 hits. His other records included most games played, 3,562; most times at bat, 14,053; and most seasons with 200 hits or more, 10 (equaled by Ichiro Suzuki in 2010). His lifetime batting average was .303.”

Just for perspective, this is what Rose’s AVERAGE was per year:
585 at-bats
.303 batting average
8 home runs
8 stolen bases
6 times caught stealing
91 runs scored
51 runs batted in
.409 slugging average

There’s NO WAY those numbers belong in the Hall of Fame, except he kept playing LONG after he should’ve retired, because he remained a crappy Reds team’s link to long-past glory days.

Most times at bat is the key to every reason he’s famous.

I still think that is the Dodger’s Steve Yeager. Took that huge bat splinter to the throat while in the on-deck circle in ‘76 and still played great ball after.

” and my comment stands.”

You disagree that Bench was the best catcher ever?

My father used to think so, too, but loved to tell me this story, which I’ve just now seen for the first time. :-)

If Pete Rose played on the Braves or the Cubs of his era, he would not have gotten so many hits, as he would have been pitched around. You can’t do that when you have Joe Morgan, George Foster and Johnny Bench coming up. In later years, you couldn ‘t do it with Mike Schmidt and Greg Luzinski. coming up, either.

>> They can bash Pete all they want, but he was a winner. World Series rings, division championships. <<

By that logic, Pat Borders belongs in the Hall of Fame: 1992 and 1993 World Series Winner, 1993 World Series MVP. Rose has two rings, but a .269 WS batting average with a .369 slugging percentage ain’t gonna win HIM any WS MVPs.

Pete’s transgression didn’t enhance his own stats or wins.

And EVERY other rule-breaker has been given chances, and is not banned from the sport entirely.

I’m done with baseball until Pete Rose is in the Hall of Fame... and if they wait until he is dead, then MLB is dead to me forever. Period.

I feel the same as you do, I also stopped watching baseball abecause of Rose not being inducted.
George Steinbrenner owned horse and bet on them, Rose bet
on hi own team to win, what is the difference?
I lived for a decade in Vegas and believe me Rose was loved in Vegas, and crowds always around him, Gamblers
knew he was like them only interested in winning not throwing a game. Nobody who hustled like Charlie Hustle would bet against his own team.

Baseball lost lots of fans like me with their BS, its like
hating Trump, silly.

LOL! No way in HELL would anyone have pitched around a guy who was strictly a singles-only hitter. He averaged 56 RBIs and only 8 HRs! Then again, maybe they could’ve been hoping to pick him off!

Yeah, that used to be my rock-solid assessment, too.

Jackson deserves it AS MUCH as Rose — not at all.

BUT, since we put the professional “Dream Team” in the Olympics at the expense of Jim Thorpe, I won’t be surprised if politics eventually overrides the issue.

After all, many here really do believe the Electoral College is an outdated concept, and defend without question Kamala Harris’ eligibility for POTUS.

:-(

You disagree that Rose took a cheap shot at Bench and only went further when Kilmeade prodded him?

cheap shot?

“I’ll continue going around the world we live in and telling everybody he’s the greatest catcher of all times,” Rose said. “I don’t get tired of saying that because it’s the truth.
