Smarter people listen to instrumental music: study

here seems to be an air of pretension among aficionados of jazz and classical music, psychological research is giving them good reason.

A new study published in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences suggests that those who prefer instrumental music tend to be more intelligent.

Study author Elena Racevska, a PhD student at Oxford Brookes University, became interested in how musical preference is tied to personality traits as she learned about the Savanna-IQ Interaction Hypothesis, which presumes that more intelligent individuals seek more novel experiences compared to less intelligent people.

“After reading Kanazawa’s papers, one of which was on the relationship between intelligence and musical preferences, we decided to further test his hypothesis using a different set of predictors — namely, a different type of intelligence test (i.e. a nonverbal measure), and the uses of music questionnaire,” says Racevska. “We also measured a number of variables likely to have an effect in this relationship, such as taking part in extra-curricular music education, its type and duration.”

I have some of those bands, too. But I printed up your list so that I could add to my collection!

I agree, Blue Sky is the best. The lyrics are so upbeat, light hearted and fun. I can just see in my mind’s eye walking along the river and the river not caring where it’s going.

There are great singers out there today and in the past, no doubt. I was referring to the post-1960 era.

Love, love, LOVE PETER AND THE WOLF; still. Also TUBBY THE TUBA, both of which I first heard on the radio, when I was about 3 or so!

My family always had LIVE FROM THE MET on, so opera ( classical music, Broadway tunes, and operettas as well ) is just something I've always heard, known, and like.

Jussi Bjorling is THE best tenor, ever, doing Nessum Dorma. You can hear him do it on YouTube.

All of the early 20th century ( through the 1930s and even some beyond then ) Brit musical theatre is rooted in G&S! So, believe it or not, is the entire Marx Brothers’ shtick. Groucho was a HUGE G&S fanatic/Savoyard.

I did not know that about Marx.

Thank you.

I must say that G&S in Welch is unintellible.

Not enough vowels.

Just for the halibut this afternoon I pulled up the Baby Shark (doo doo doo doo doo doo) song, and it has been viewed almost 4 billion-with-a-B times. There's no accounting for taste :-)

“don’t enjoy ‘jazz’ at all”

Jazz: Music’s answer to Tourette’s Syndrome.

I guess I spent too many years studying the structure of actual music - Bach, etc. “Structure” is the key word.

Groucho was SO much of a rabid Savoyard ( as am I ), that he yearned to do KoKo, in The Mikado all of his life and finally did it, on T.V. when I was a kiddo. He STUNK!

My parents did G&S semi-professionally, so I grew up back stage, at rehearsals, and knowing every note, word, comedy bit, and history.

All of the Marx Brothers' shows and movies are based on G&S; including the characters.

The late 1930s Brit play, "ME AND MY GIRL" is not only G&Sian, but one entire scene is stolen from RUDDYGORE! And the first time I saw it, in London, I gasped, laughed, and damned near literally fell out of my seat.

I could see any G&S operetta, sung in ANY language, and it wouldn't matter, no it really wouldn't matter, matter, matter ( forgive the Gilbertian quote; couldn't help myself. LOL ), because I would hear it in English in my head. But I know what you mean. :-)

I also LOVE Broadway musicals and know the history of that too. :-)

“the river not caring where it’s going”

And it’s widely regarded as the most melodic guitar solo ever recorded.

A veritable masterpiece. Only Machine Gun (Hendrix) comes close.

A Dickie Betts song, that Duane transformed for the ages.

Machine Gun. Live. New Years Eve 69/70 at Madison Square Garden.

Thanks for the link!

I DO watch the "LIVE FROM THE MET" on PBS, but only when they do something I like.
