I am curious to read everyone's thoughts on what prompted the Mueller investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 General Election.
Here is mine. I believe this was proposed by Brennan and Clapper due to their incompetence in stopping Russian interference with the 2016 election. It was a major Obama foreign policy failure, and the administration needed a fall guy. They pinned it on Trump and leaked everything to CNN for publishing.
I think that Hillary's secret server was the primary way everyone communicated and once it was found out, the narrative became Russian hacking. This is why Comey exonerated Hillary and gave immunity to the company that managed the server as well as anyone who had a Hillary cell phone. The phones were destroyed and the server put under lock and key. I also believed the Wasserman-Schultz gave her two Pakistani IT guys access to the server so they could hack it and then blame the Russians. What she didn't realize is her two IT guys then gave the keys to every US enemy.

I think it began as intelligence gathering by the dems on the opposition (Trump). They knew he was a real threat of getting elected and they needed Hillary to gain the office to keep all the evidence of their nefarious activities smothered until time could erase all evidence.
By dems, I mean the Obama administration, the Hillary cabal, the deep state, etc.
When Trump won, the dem players switched to using their powers to hamper his success and to unseat him. All the while preventing any of their previous criminal actions from being made public.
Plain and simple: Treason.

Are you being naive or intentionally trolling?
You laid out most of the important aspects but ignored the glaring motivation.
The deep state had already started counter intelligence against the Trump campaign before the “russian narrative” surfaced just before election day to explain the loss, and went full blitz in the media almost immediately after the loss.
The whole reason for the Russian narrative was because Hillary rigged the primary against Sanders and the information (as well as potential email evidence) was threatening to expose her conspiracy. The DNC naturally needed to blame Trump for it all, even though it was Hillary’s email server that was (by karma) her downfall, and wiki-leaks had already been threatening data dumps. The goal was to cover up the corrupt DNC primary as well as counter-intelligence survailence (spying) against their political opposition, but the method was to tie Trump to russia, which would also work as an “insurance policy” if they lost.
It’s all so tenuous and frail that I promise you that if the parties were switched, lots of people would already be serving jail sentences by now, instead of a long, slow, resistance crawl in which the DOJ stop-gaps and obstacles against exposure had to slowly be removed.

The private server in the closet wasn't used to conduct "illegal" business on the part of the Clinton Foundation. It was set up so they could conduct the CIA's business outside any scrutiny by Congress or the White House ... while giving Congress and the White House plausible deniability about any of it in the event the crap hit the fan and the whole operation was exposed.
Everyone in Congress and the White House knew what was going on, too.
I'm still not sure how Mueller's investigation ties into this, unless it was all just a smokescreen to divert public attention away from what I've posted here.
Hillary lost. Everyone implicated in her sell-out of national security for five years as SoS is looking at a noose and this was a desperation hail-mary play to save their necks.

This is still extremely confused. It now appears that Combover and Brennanski were involved in Deep State spying before Trump ever came along. Of whom? Why?
I think it was more than political spying. It looks to me like these guys were, as working for Zero, trying to control people via dirt and threats of FISA stuff.
So I think you have to go back way before Trump’s announcement, and certainly before Trump’s success in the campaign. This MAY be an attempt to coverup what they already knew about Cankles and a secret server, AND/OR to blackmail her as the next president.
Trying to stop Trump at any cost.
So, that was when some of the opposition research etc. started. They wanted to hang something on him. How DARE someone from outside the amazing circle of ‘leaders’ they were a part of think he could be President, let alone feel he could get away with criticizing them. They probably felt it wouldn't be that hard to find something they could ramp up into a prosecutable crime.
Then, Trump continued to gain traction, and all of the predictions about him fading in the race turned out to be wrong. On top of this, the Wikileaks emails came out - showing just how crooked and manipulative the DNC and Clinton's associates were, AND Trump comes out and publicly jokes about the Russians finding Hillary's missing emails. So, now there's even more hatred by Hillary and probably Obama as well, coupled with some degree of fear/trepidation that their web of manipulations and deceit would be found out. This was made even worse when Trump started talking about draining the swamp. So they accelerated a plan for taking him down.
Except it seems to have started LONG before Trump announced, or even was a serious front-runner.
Step One - Clear Hillary with a “slap on the wrist” so no one will challenge her Election “victory”
Step Two - Collect negative data on Trump that will be used in the unlikely event that he is elected
Step Three - Whitewash the illegal actions of Hillary involving Russia by tying Trump to Russian collusion
Step Four - Impeach Trump for Treason. Install Hillary as the “rightful” winner of the 2016 election
Corrupt CIA, FBI, and Justice Democrats.

Once Rogers caught all the unmasking in an audit and alerted Trump, this put an end to this spying procedure. They took a new route by taking out the FISA application on Carter Page. By doing so they could spy on Page and anybody he was in contact with. Like a game a telephone could go down the line and spy again on Trump associates up the line. And the cheery on top of their sundae was the leaking to their all too willing partners in the press, to smear the Trump presidency as a nest of traitors to the country.
“Russian collusion” hoax was genius and impossible to prove and is a great excuse and justification for everything nefarious the Deep State want to do to the right wing. Like I said genius.
No answer is complete or accurate if it doesn’t mention Hillary’s crimes or Obama’s incompetence and also HIS crimes.
THAT will cover a LOT of ground and many other names.
Again, there was NO RUSSIAN INTERFERENCE, it's a lie.
