SNL Cold Open Dubs Politics ‘Depressing,’ Focuses on Avengers and Game of Thrones Instead

Saturday Night Live‘s cold open went mostly politics-free tonight, choosing instead to focus on a ‘feud’ between Avengers and Game of Thrones.

Making a nod to the political events of the week, the sketch started with a C-SPAN ‘announcer’ noting they would have shown footage from Attorney General William Barr‘s House testimony but “Barr decided not to show up.”

Rep. Steve Cohen‘s chicken stunt also got a mention.

“The Democrats chose to do some light prop comedy with a bucket of chicken,” the announcer said. “The whole thing was so depressing that we’d rather focus on the two things all Americans can get behind: Game of Thrones And Avengers.”

I gotta be honest. I watched some episodes here and there throughout my life and NEVER once laughed out loud.

Except maybe when Chris Farley did some skits.

It’s JUST NOT FUNNY

Are you saying “normal” Americans have no interest in Avengers or Game of Thrones?

I caught up on the first 3 GoT episodes of Season 8 Friday night, then I saw Endgame at a matinee on Saturday.

They were both just kinda...meh. They were both fairly predictable (which is a bigger criticism of GoT than the Avengers). I’m hoping that now that the Night King is dead, that some intrigue will be injected back into the last 3 episodes.

The Avengers on the other hand is in sore need of editing...3 hours and 10 minutes...totally unnecessary. Also, I cringed at Captain America giving relationship advice to gay men as well as the feminist-posing scene that happened at the end (battle-scene) when all the female heroes just happened to all come together and attack at the same time...so contrived and so lame. Finally, Disney needs to jettison the whole depiction of Thor as some low self-esteem, whiney, clownish comedy-relief figure. It’s way past old.

Why post this crap ?

The media is finally waking up to Americans tired of unhinged raging at Trump disguised as comedy.

I found myself in a captive audience watching a recent Stephen Colbert show. The entire 30 minutes was nothing more than Colbert, red-faced with fury, lashing out at President Trump. And then he brought out his guest, another red-faced liberal raging over Trump. It is my understanding that every Colbert show is like this.

It's not funny. It's sad. Clearly Colbert has let President Trump move in to his head. Maybe SNL is figuring this out?

Anyways, If Jim has a problem with what is posted here, he takes care of it.

I’d say they do only by default, because they don’t know there’s better out there.

And here's a truth: SNL was only ever funny when you were in college. All the rest of the time, it sucked.

Troof. I watched it in college, with Belushi, Chase, and Murray. After that, I lost track, and knew the show was no longer aimed at me, but at a different age group. Saw Hartman, Farley, Murphy, in other things, but never on SNL.

Couple of things I DO remember: A Johnny Carson interview where he was asked about SNL. He said some of it was funny, but that some of it was incredibly cruel. He mentioned the Claudine Longet skit where they showed skiers falling and voiced over that they'd accidentally been shot by her. He also laughed about them complaining how difficult it was to put on a 90 minute live show every week, when he was doing it five times a week. IIRC, he also mentioned them taking what should have been a one off gag and turning it into a ten minute skit.
