Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said Saturday he’s reached an agreement with key lawmakers on a plan to legalize recreational marijuana in the state starting next year.

The legislation would allow adults 21 and older to legally buy cannabis for recreational use from licensed dispensaries. Illinois residents could possess up to about an ounce (30 grams) of marijuana, while non-residents could possess about half an ounce (15 grams).

The measure also would automatically expunge some marijuana convictions.

If it passes, Illinois would join 10 other states, including neighboring Michigan, in legalizing recreational marijuana. While the Illinois law would take effect Jan. 1, the first licenses for Illinois growers, processors and dispensaries wouldn’t be issued until May and July 2020, the governor’s office said.

Pritzker was joined by fellow Democratic lawmakers in Chicago to announce the deal, which comes after years of discussion among state legislators. They said the measure will be introduced Monday, kicking off debate at the Legislature, where Democrats hold a majority in both chambers. …

“CDOT spokesman Sam Cole said the department considers the number of deaths in which the driver was marijuana-impaired under state law to be the most reliable indicator of its impact on the highways.

“By that measure, marijuana-related deaths are clearly down.”

6% is not big, and there's nothing there about a Colorado admission. I posted a link showing Colorado says the opposite.

The one making the claim bears the burden of proof - otherwise debate degenerates into an exchange of unsupported claims and counterclaims.

An increase of 6% is an increase of 6%. It’s not “no change”.

they don’t care how the public will be endangered by drivers who are higher than a kite driving while under the influence and smashing into innocent peoples’ vehicles?

A risk that's been mostly overblown by hysterical drug warriors.

There is a lot less money in marijuana taxes that the Illinois government and other like minded politicians pretend.

It will cost a ton of money to police counterfeit tax stamps and other untaxed grass. The higher the taxes are, the more motivation for gangsters to smuggle or grow their own product in, rob warehouses, factories, fields, etc.

The windfall that Colorado received was caused by Marijuana tourism. Its not going to be repeated, just like when most states legalized casino gambling.

This is fool’s gold for the Illinois dupes who see this as a panacea.

If Illinois or any other state wants to legalize grass, it should be done on its own merits, the money just isn’t there.
