An international team led by Duke-NUS Medical School has found a potential link between autistic-like behaviour in adult mice and exposure to a common antidepressant in the womb. They also identified a treatment that helped improve memory loss and social interactions, according to the new study published in the journal Molecular Brain.
Antidepressants are commonly prescribed for treating major depression and post-traumatic stress disorder, including in pregnant women. One of the most commonly prescribed antidepressants is fluoxetine, a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Fluoxetine can cross the placenta and is also detected in breast milk. Little is known about its safety during pregnancy, and not enough studies have been conducted on its long-term effects on offspring.
The team from Duke-NUS and their collaborators in South Korea and Singapore investigated adult mice born to mothers treated with fluoxetine (sold under the brand names Prozac and Sarafem) over a 15-day time period that corresponds to the second trimester in humans, in comparison with those born to mothers given normal saline as controls. They found key differences in behaviour.

BAD IDEA!!!!
Other studies have found that the link is that the risk of autism increases when women WHO HAD BEEN on antidepressents WENT OFF OF THEM!!!!
Looks like everything causes autism. Everything except pot and meth that is.
They generally tell you that during pregnancy you should go off anything that is not necessary for life, limb or eyesight.
As the grandmother of an austistic boy, I am disgusted by lack of good evidence as to the possibilities of the cause. I dont trust any theories as there seems to be no serious attempts to find a cause. We know its occurring exponentially so it has to be caused by something man is doing. I am not convinced vaccines are not involved and I am not convinced that drugs used by doctors are not invoked. It looks like there should be credible reasons but it looks like everyone wants to pass the buck.
Here it looks like a mother needs to stay off of them even while breastfeeding.
I think genetic factors could by themselves exhibit an exponential pattern. I have a granddaughter with type 1 diabetes, so Ive done some thinking about it. We did not realize that I had it in my family history. In the old days people with diabetes simply died. The gene was not passed on. Weve reached an age though where people can survive due to the miracle of science. I believe that is part of the reason the US has worse health statistics than some of these other countries. Weve had modern medicine for a longer time and the gene pool is muddier.
Up to 10% of pregnant women are on them.
There’s always been depressed moms and mental illness has a large genetic component.
But it’s gotta be more than coincidental that antidepressant use and autism incidence rates have both gone up during the last thirty years or so.
I’ve been thinking about “gene pool” issues also...wondering why 90 something year old relatives are living so long, mostly in decent health, while younger ones have problems (mostly weight)....maybe the easy access to food, especially carbs (fast food, sweets, etc)...earlier in life. Just a thought. Altho the issue of autism could also be people trying to play with life - friends have an autistic grandson...his twin sister is fine...parents were in late 30s or early 40s when trying to conceive...used “help”...wondering if that doesn’t factor in also.
Whether true or not, I don’t know but I recently read where five research Drs have been murdered. Three in the US and two in Europe. They all were working on the same project and all found that infant vaccines are being contaminated with a cancer enzyme. Apparently it is not industry protocol for the finished product vaccines to be screened for contamination unless an obvious issue arises that causes public outcry. This particular cancer enzyme that they all discovered was the same enzyme. They all were randomly testing infant vaccines and the presence of this particular enzyme is known to inhibit the body’s ability to assimilate vitamin D. Accordingly with the absence of vitamin D at such a young age, the body’s natural defense mechanism to word off cancer is severely weakened if not rendered it totally void for certain maladies. All of these Drs also determined that not having an adequate amount of vitamin D as an infant that autism can and likely is a result. Accordingly, their colleagues believe that all five were murdered for their discovery.

Hit the nail on the head here! Way way too much sugar consumption by everybody not just the poor! First thing to do to get a handle on this is end sugar subsidies!
Also there is something very important to remember about autism today. We have greatly expand the spectrum of behaviors that are not called autism. That’s one of the key reasons why there is this apparent dramatic increase in autism.
Yes....”dessert” used to be SPECIAL....like a few times a year, I think, altho in the 1950s it may have started growing (I scarfed up those orange slices from my great grandmother’s candy dish then)....now, people have dessert every morning (Starbucks or similar sugar laden drink)....and then more at night after dinner. And, yes, the autism spectrum has grown. True autistics really cannot function in our world, I thought.
Pregnant mothers NOT getting enough Vitamin D3 probably contribute to problems too.
That is why I recommend thalidomide in cases such as this. It won’t cause autism.
This makes more sense than vaccines.
Unfortunately, its Politifact.
Then they aren't genetic twins ... 2 different eggs ...
LOL!
I see you made sense from my post in spite of my typos!
Thanks!
I really wish you could go back and edit typos!
