Yellowstone volcano: Earthquake swarm hits deadly caldera which could be sign of ERUPTION
Express ^ | Sean Martin

YELLOWSTONE volcano could be about to erupt and challenge humanity’s existence as a spate of mini-quakes have been felt around the fearsome caldera.

During the month of April, a total of 63 earthquakes struck around the Wyoming based supervolcano. All of the tremors were relatively small, with the largest registering at 2.6 on the Richter scale, hitting on April 29. But experts have warned that it is not necessarily about the strength of an earthquake around a volcano, but more the quantity of them.

Some scientists believe that tremors around a volcano could be a sign that it might blow.

Portland State University Geology Professor Emeritus Scott Burns said a spate of small tremors around a volcano usually signifies that magma and gasses beneath the surface are beginning to navigate their exit.

He said: “If you get swarms under a working volcano, the working hypothesis is that magma is moving up underneath there.”

However, others disagree about whether an earthquake swarm near a volcano could be a sign of things to come.

Jamie Farrell at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, believes this is just part of the natural cycle for Yellowstone volcano, saying: “Earthquake swarms are fairly common in Yellowstone.

“There is no indication that this swarm is related to magma moving through the shallow crust.”

The Yellowstone Caldera supervolcano last erupted 70,000 years ago.

If the volcano were to erupt it would kill an estimated 87,000 people immediately and make two-thirds of the USA immediately uninhabitable.

Nonsense. I remember in the last 20+ years, when Art Bell was on the radio, and there were thousands of earthquakes less than 2.5 in about a 30 day period and It was great radio. It’s NOT going off in our short 80+ year lifetimes, I totally believe that.

I don’t think it is. I think the Great Salt Lake is the remnant of an earlier sea. You can see the former water level on the mountains surrounding the Salt Lake valley.

We went there last August and were thinking about going again this August. This sure puts a damper on the enthusiasm I had about returning, lol. It probably won’t erupt during our lifetimes, but you never know.

"We ate buffalo... and elk..."

Both are a risk to life and limb on the roads. Be careful out there...

“It would make two thirds of the United States uninhabitable.”

Just curious, is that considered an increase from current levels? :)

https://volcanoes.usgs.gov/volcanoes/yellowstone/monitoring_earthquakes.html

“Since 1973, there have been over 48,000 earthquakes located in the Yellowstone region. Over 99% of those earthquakes are magnitude 2 or below and are not felt by anyone. Earthquake swarms (earthquakes that cluster in time and space) account for about 50% of the total seismicity in Yellowstone and can occur anywhere in the Yellowstone region, but they are most common in the east-west band of seismicity between Hebgen Lake and the Norris Geyser Basin. Most swarms are small, containing 10-20 earthquakes, and short, lasting for 1–2 days. However, large swarms that can contain 1,000’s of earthquakes and last for months do occur on occasion.”+

Its had three huge blows over the past couple million years, but numerous smaller ones. Lots of talk about what another huge one could do. But I’ve never seen a description of what the far more likely little one would do. That we should know and probably can plan for.

The elk stayed a good distance from the road. On the other hand, we had to stop more than once for buffalo on the road. They look at you when you drive slowly by, as if daring you to do anything to get them off the road. You do have to be careful when driving in Yellowstone, as the animals do go onto the road fairly often.

Yes, the circular openings along the bar were for the large jugs of wine from which it was dipped for customers.

I thought they were for pots of fondue with small fires underneath to keep them hot. What's a bar without free snacks? :)

Some people are so bored with their lives that they seem to want something like this to happen.

Either that or they have a mountain of MRE’s slowly rotting in the garage and they are concerned that they may have wasted their money!

Personally I enjoy civilization.

Socialists within our own borders do this every day of the week in all Democrat-Run Major Metro Areas!

We should WELCOME our new Volcano Overlords! One, and DONE! :)
