YELLOWSTONE volcano could be about to erupt and challenge humanitys existence as a spate of mini-quakes have been felt around the fearsome caldera.
During the month of April, a total of 63 earthquakes struck around the Wyoming based supervolcano. All of the tremors were relatively small, with the largest registering at 2.6 on the Richter scale, hitting on April 29. But experts have warned that it is not necessarily about the strength of an earthquake around a volcano, but more the quantity of them.
Some scientists believe that tremors around a volcano could be a sign that it might blow.
Portland State University Geology Professor Emeritus Scott Burns said a spate of small tremors around a volcano usually signifies that magma and gasses beneath the surface are beginning to navigate their exit.
He said: If you get swarms under a working volcano, the working hypothesis is that magma is moving up underneath there.
However, others disagree about whether an earthquake swarm near a volcano could be a sign of things to come.
Jamie Farrell at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, believes this is just part of the natural cycle for Yellowstone volcano, saying: Earthquake swarms are fairly common in Yellowstone.
There is no indication that this swarm is related to magma moving through the shallow crust.
The Yellowstone Caldera supervolcano last erupted 70,000 years ago.
If the volcano were to erupt it would kill an estimated 87,000 people immediately and make two-thirds of the USA immediately uninhabitable.

That bad?
Of course....the libtards will.
about to blow could be 100 years from now geologic time is very slow... I myself am more concerned abou this then global warming....this is real and there is np way of knowing when the other Global warming not so real.
Thanks SJackson. Hey, it's only a volcano.

Thanks fieldmarshaldj.
Well, is this one later than Mt St Helen? I dont recall 75% of the US becoming uninhabitable. Whats the diff?
The real killer is the amount of material ejected, its type and the duration of the eruption. Yellowstone would put so much ash (powdered stone by the cubic mile) into the air that much of the northern hemisphere would not have full day light for years and lower the temperature by 10s of degrees for over a 100 years. This is not to mention the effects of the mega-million tons of sulfur dioxide and other noxious gasses.
See the diff, yet?
Mount Pinatubo, Philippines in 1991 was a 6.0 VEI and the largest known in the 20th century; as was Krakatoa 1883. Mount Tambora, Indonesia in 1815 was a 7.0.
The only know super volcano eruption was Mt Toba 75,000 years ago and is credited with wiping out most of the human race.
PIF did a good job of explaining it already, let’s maybe look at it from a bit different perspective...
If Mt St Helens was a 2 year old with hiccups, the Yellowstone caldera will be a 3 day Metallica concert.
I won’t worry too much about it until I see reports of all the animals leaving the area in a big hurry. Deer, elk, buffalo, squirrels etc all seem to have a 6th sense and will try to escape when it happens. If we pay attention well see all sorts of birds and animals on the move and in a hurry. Then it’s time to be very worried. Their instincts work a lot better than ours do...
That’s a very, very good point.
What would be the effect(s) of, and how should we plan for, a much more likely Mt. St. Helens, Pinatubo, Krakatoa, or Tambora (as we go down the probability scale but up the intensity scale) size event?
Two interesting side notes:
The usually quoted Volcano Emissivity Index (VEI) is a cumulative figure, over the duration of an eruption. So, Tambora has a VEI of 7, and Krakatoa a VEI of 6, even though Krakatoa had a substantially greater peak explosion: It propelled ash 50 miles into the atmosphere, and is believed to be the loudest sound heard in recorded history. Krakatoa also shot an unusually large amount of SO2 into the stratosphere, causing greater weather and climatic effects than a VEI of 6 might suggest.
2nd, while most volcanoes and faults misbehave in moderate fashion (if something like a Krakatoa can be called “moderate”!) much more frequently than the occurrence of extreme events, I am not sure all can be expected to behave this way over “short” periods of time, say, 10,000 years or so. I am also quite unsure that the smaller events are distributed at all evenly. Maybe they “bunch up” around cataclysmic events? This worries me a bit, in the case of the New Madrid fault. Why?
Historically, the “big ones”, or perhaps more accurately, series of “big ones” occur on the New Madrid fault system every several hundred years, or so. But we don’t know if more moderate events, say, an order of magnitude less, happen with any frequency between the major events, or if they occur mainly as pre-shocks and aftershocks bunched around the main events. There also seems to have been not much in the way of pre-shocks in advance of the first main shock on 12/16/1811 — a not unusual pattern, for earthquakes. There are many small quakes, but there is also little apparent movement of the fault. What all this means is unclear. Is little energy being dissipated now, and, would a future big quake / series of big quakes again happen with no warning, despite improvements in our understanding of quakes in general?
The country of Iceland uses their active volcanos as energy sources for electricity and heat. I wonder why we dont do the same here.
If Yellowstone erupts, man-made climate change will become irrelevant.....Trump’s tax returns become irrelevant....only survival of humanity matters.
Those that survive need to be aware that the left will try to use such a disaster as an excuse to suspend the constitution and usurp power.
I dont think so. The left is, to a large extent, made possible by a civilization that gives a large proportion of people the luxury to not have to struggle to survive. This only became the case in the Industrial Age. In the case of a super volcano eruption that kills a large number immediately and plunges the rest of the world into a small ice age, the immediate concern would be survival. I am not certain that the culture of uselessness encouraged by socialists would survive when everyone must focus on survival.
Add in the idea that our enemies (China?) might think this would be an opportune time to attack us (And we would strike them with what we had left) - yeah - it will be basic survival of the entire planet I think.
That sounds awful.
I was driving one night in the left lane of a freeway when the car ahead of me suddenly swerved violently and then dove all the way to the right shoulder. I saw copious quantities of blood and scattered body parts. Directly ahead was a torso, which I could not avoid; it felt like I hit a log. All of this happened within a few seconds. I suspect that the car ahead of me was totaled, from the way it handled when its driver swerved off the road. My car was damaged, but the damage was not apparent until months later.
As I said before, the strategy of staying behind another car to avoid hitting deer works... sort of.
“Each number is 10X the previous, so a 10 would be 50 times bigger than a 5.0, or technically: the scale is logarithmic, with each interval on the scale representing a tenfold increase in observed ejecta criteria.”
An event with a VEI of 10 would be much more than 50 times larger than a 5. The difference would be a factor of 10 to the fifth power, or 100,000 times.
Other than that, good post.
Pelosi's fault
Yep - and with lots of pic-a-nic baskets...
I don’t know where I’m going to go when the volcano blow.
Cassius Publicus in the latin
*** “When you visit Yellowstone, the magma may be as close as 3 miles below the surface. This does not seem to concern the visitors (who would die instantly in an eruption, anyway) but does make for some spectacular hot springs, geysers, fumaroles, mud pots, etc. It is definitely worth a visit (or 2 or 3...)” ***
I spent a month back in the 70’s hitch hiking/hiking camping all over the Park, Rangers were always telling me to get bells and go back where the Tourists were ... too young to listen, it is amazing that I didn’t end up being Grizzley food. ;^)
