The only reason those HOV lanes even exist in Pittsburgh is that they were a REQUIREMENT from Uncle Sugar (i.e. the Feds).

You are correct, few people use them. The access gates don’t even work half the time.

In either St Louis or Kansas City on I-70 there is a three lane highway between the East and West bound lanes that is for rush hour traffic. In the mornings it is open to east bound traffic INTO the city, in the evenings it is open to west bound traffic OUT of the city.
Not a bad idea, only problem was few people used them.
I used them every time I passed through, and I was driving a big truck. I tried telling other truck drivers that trucks were allowed but they called me a liar.
I was passed many times by local LEO and never had a problem. Easily saved half an hour using the rush hour lanes.

HOV lanes are a freakin joke....I drove for 13 plus years on major hiways in the Pittsburgh area, where we had these dumbass hov lanes....in over a decade of driving, I saw maybe 20 cars in all those years....it is simply a waste of space.

I've been hearing that BS for years. I've been driving on the Highway 59 HOV lane since it opened in Houston (20 years?). There used to be a talk radio guy who joked about the lack of traffic on it. There is always a lot of traffic on the HOV. Sometimes it is as backed up as the freeway or even more backed up. Too bad you can't find a friend to ride with you.
