Looked at RVs...tissue and tinfoil
Looked on YouTube and saw 'cargo trailer to camper conversion'.
Built my own 7' x 14' brand new dual axle with inside shower and queen bed for $1500.00
^ That being the cost of materials above the $4k for for the trailer.
Its rock solid, and becoming a popular alternative to pre-man overpriced cheap junk sold nowdays..
Look on YouTube for cargo trailer to camper conversion!

Hi. We recently sold our Class A and I miss it very much. That said, from my own experience, diesel pusher is the way to go. The chassis is a smooth ride, turning is a breeze (rear swing isn’t nearly as much of an issue as a gas chassis). With the distances you’re talking about going, you’d be much happier in a diesel pusher.

There are floor plans that are 1 and 1/2 bath. This is what our bus had and it was wonderful. The only thing different I would do should we buy another bus is to find one with a king bed. The queen was just too cramped.

Best of luck in your search and I hope you have many, many wonderful trips in whatever model you choose!

1. Rent one to try out if you like the travel style.

2. Maybe rent different sizes to fine turn to right size for your travel.

3. Look at flying or driving a car to the area you want to explore, then rent a RV for the short travel. May make more dollars and sense then owning a RV which will not be used a lot. Remember if renting no storage and maintenance costs. Just arrive and travel.

4. My plan is a Sprinter Van size unit because our travel will be to cities and not the wilderness so a smaller RV will be easier in a city.

5. RVs are like boats economically, a hole in the water..... so make sure before buying.

I would recommend a fifth wheel and truck over a motorhome, but do you know how many plane tickets and hotel rooms you can buy for $80,000?

Something to consider. Travel in a regular vehicle and stay in hotels. It is VERY expensive and cumbersome to haul your “hotel” around with you.

Renting a moho is no doubt a lot cheaper. If you like it, buy one.

You can use your truck to tow your home,
use your home to tow your truck, or your truck
is your home and truck. Mobility once you
reach your destination is a big consideration.
Extra activities such as trips to the local
store for supplies, off-shoot sight seeing
trips (primative roads), visiting relatives
or friends who live in residential
neighborhoods. These are just some instances
where a class A will be a hinderance.
Most of my traveling friends opt to tow
their home. 5th wheels have great options
and plenty of room with slide-outs. JMHO

Trailers have little storage space.
Diesels cost 10s of thousands more than a good V-10.
You live in Florida, Flat.
A V-10 will do just fine until you go up serious hills like the on just south of Chattanooga.
Phone app, All Stays will show most of the rv parks, fuel, low bridges Wal marts, propane and so very much more. Also will rate the parks, good bad or whatever and what each offers.,
Good luck and explore our most beautiful country.
Been to 40 states in our RV’s and most everywhere folks are great.

Rent one first to see if you really like it.

Just a point on storage.

Preplan on what you need and, once you’ve planned what you need to take with you, you should only need enough room for small gifts for the family that you will buy as you travel across the country.

Learn to switch out items if you find anything that you really want and don’t carry any more than that.

I don’t think any retired couple really needs more than a type C RV. Anything more and it’s too much for enjoyment of travel, imo.

Set a budget.

Do a LOT of research. Talk to people who have RV’s and see why they got what they did. Make a list of what you have to have in an RV, what you’d like to have, and what you really don’t need. Go to RV shows and dealerships and browse.

Check out rv.net - great info there on everything RV related.

The old axiom is “buy your second RV first”. IOW, don’t buy basic with the idea that you might upgrade. You won’t be satisfied and will likely upgrade much sooner than you thought you would.

Speaking from experience, towing a car is a pain. We did it for many years with a motorhome. Finally we sold the MH and bought a truck and small travel trailer. We wanted to travel cross country and the small trailer works great for that.

How long do you plan to live in the RV at a time? If you plan to go to a warm climate in the winter for several months, you’ll want something that you can spread out in and may want a washer/dryer.

Where are you going to store it? Weather is brutal on RV’s that are stored out in the open. In that case, consider covering it. Again, speaking from experience, covering a 36’ MH is much, much harder than covering a 26’ travel trailer - but both are pains in the butt when you start to get older.

Those are just a few considerations I can think of. We’ve had a lot of experience, so if you have specific questions, freepmail me.

Happy looking!

One thing I thought about, if I came into good money and could do RV, is that a new SUV and the motel life was more my style. The cost would be about the same, over the long haul, and you wouldn’t need to more maintenance than carrying your luggage to.your room and you could still see America at your leisure.

We lived in a 5th wheel for extended periods two times. EZ to set up EZ to tow (350 dually diesel - the more truck the better, and it becomes your runaround vehicle). Regardless, get at least 2 slides - living and bedroom - it will make a huge difference. And, unless you are Bill Gates, buy used. Don’t be afraid of being a newbie. RVers are always ready to land a helpful hand. Enjoy!!

I should add that a rice cooker can take the place of many pots, so you can minimize the amount of dishes you need.

I like the truck/towed camper combo myself. Put a cap on the back of the truck and you have an extra 150 cu.ft. of storage which lets you downsize your space requirements for the camper (which makes it easier to tow.) Use the extra storage space to bring along all the stuff you need for a great party - screened in sun tent, bbq, small generator, sound system, tiki torches, coolers - if you're traveling to have fun and meet people, sitting inside an RV won't do it.

A truck/camper combo also lets you drop the camper and the wife off to play with the grandkids (we plan trips around grandkids these day) while you take off with the truck to go fishing. No matter how much room you're towing around some "alone time" is very important if you still want to be married when you get back home :)

FYI

Some of the roads to Alaska are very bad.
I rode up with my parents one year.
They’re constantly working on the roads and the dirt ones
will shake the RV to pieces.
And you’re on them for hours.
