Park rangers responded to a call shortly before noon Wednesday that someone had fallen over the rim.
The park's helicopter and technical rescue team recovered the body of a 67-year-old man. The name and hometown of the man wasn't immediately available.
The National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner are investigating the death, park officials said.
A spokeswoman said it was the first over-the-edge death this year at Grand Canyon National Park, which had 17 fatalities last year.

I’m dying to get there for that once in a lifetime shot.
And not a peep from “moms against canyons” or camera Hogg.
A boat ride around Manhattan was far more impressive.
I’ve never been there. Would like to go there.
But by the time I arrange a tour, tragedies like this might force the park to gate everyone half a mile from the actual canyon. Are people taking Selfies and forget to hold on?
I was at the main lodge and stepped off the left stairs, to a walking trail into the canyon. The first step after the bottom stair was ice. I slipped and fell directly in place, at the foot of the stairs on the trail. There was no railing and I was literally a couple inches from body parts in air.
I carefully stood up and went back up the stairs.
Ive been back, since, but never near the edge.
The name and hometown of the man wasn’t immediately available.
I think it’s probably much more impressive to see the Grand Canyon from a plane then just standing next to it.
I found the Grand Canyon more akin to opening the centerfold in my Geology textbook.
For a more real visual treat, Bryce Canyon is the place to go. The features of the view are right in front of you, and you can walk thru them and touch them.
Try that at the Grand Canyon, and you are inches deep in mule manure.
Wait’ll you see Mt. Rushmore. It’s pretty cool, but it’s a LOT smaller than you expect.
I agree, I thought the Painted Desert was a lot more impressive than the Grand Canyon.
Two people died at the Grand Canyon late last month...
How can it be the first when two others fell off the side, last month?
CBS is stupid.
Bryce and Canyonlands are must sees!
Evolution in action
The skywalk is worth going to, we also did the helicopter ride down into the canyon, I rode a mule down to the bottom in the 60’s with my family.
Are you sure you visited the real Grand Canyon, and not some Chinese knock-off?
The Grand Canyon is the most impressive thing I have ever seen, in sheer size, and beauty. One can only marvel at God's creation while there.
I think the first 2 were on the Indian Reservation part of the Grand Canyon, Not part of the park. I know the last one was a week or two ago.
Well, one of those from the previous month that fell over the edge was outside the boundaries of the park itself. The other died, but we aren’t told how. He or she might have had a heart attack or something.
Did you have to ride a Donkey to complete the Canyon trail?
I’ve heard that’s how many do it.
Edges of the canyon are best approached on hands and knees so you can peer over the edge without losing your balance in a gust of wind. A wind gust can be strong enough that you have take a step to compensate balance; one step at the edge results in a long fall with a quick stop (fatal). Happens very fast.
