I used to work with a guy who played in a band called The Woodies (named after a car, of course). Some of their stuff is on Youtube, like this: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=X99Ew_5YgAY

In my experience most guitar players don’t know how to sight read sheet music. Guitar is very different than a keyboard, it’s laid out two dimensionally versus linearly like a keyboard. Sheet music translates to piano playing easier than guitar playing. Basically all piano players learn to sight read from the start, most guitar players never do. Perhaps that’s why improvisation is considered so important to guitar players. We need to be capable of winging it in a song, playing notes that suit the chords on they fly without being able to rely on sheet music to tell us what notes to finger next.

Probably up until the early 70s...instrumentals were used as lead in to the top of the hour newscasts on radio....even top-40 stations had TOH news

I learned to read sheet music through orchestra all through my school years. For playing guitar, I found it wasn’t worth the effort. The keys were usually selected for compatibility with other instruments. I never liked playing in E flat or B flat but that’s how sheet was scored, usually.

Plot twist: Metal without distortion sounds like surf music.

And of course Albert King has to be mentioned in any discussion of lefty players who strung upside down.

" used to work with a guy who played in a band called The Woodies (named after a car, of course)."

Yes and so many more in this niche: The Eliminators, Los Straightjackets, the Fathoms, and one of my fav's an all girl band out of Toronto, The Surfrajettes. This type of music is not dead by a long shot, bands have been formed in all over the planet performing in this style...

Played 10 years in a band with a guitarist who grew up in So. Cal in the 60’s. Dick Dale was his main influence at a young age and his playing had shades of the surf style.

Need to catch up with him and express my condolences.
