Healthy Sweeteners - Which ones have you tried and which do you recommend? [Vanity]
Self | 03/08/19 | FWDude

I’ve jumped on the train to better, sugar-free health and have been trying the more healthy sweeteners - the “sugar alcohols” that aren’t supposed to be as questionable as the synthetics (Aspartame, Saccharin, Sucrolase, etc.) Just wondering what experience other FReeper have had with these, and what preferences you’ve come to.

I’ve been using Stevia for a couple of years now and like it’s very sugar-like flavor and potency. I recently bought some Xylitol and Erytritol, to not so glowing report. I found the Xylitol just OK, but I had to use a lot of it to have a sweetening effect. I also bought some Erythritol and though that the after taste was somewhat unpleasant, and had to use a lot of it to get any sweetening effect as well.

So, in order of “like:” - Stevia - Xylitol - Erythritol

I’ve noticed that a lot of the Stevia products are cut with Erythritol, probably for economy sake and to cut the intensity. That’s okay with me, as long as it covers up the aftertaste of Erythritol.

Any others that I’m missing?

IIRC I”ve seen them at vitacost.com and iherb.com too.

Vitacost is owned by Kroger. Kroger lets my husband concealed carry in the store (they abide by all local laws in that way). Unlike ‘gun free’ stores that prefer their own laws...

honestly, I don’t shop much, that why I got married.

I’m old fashioned. I earn the money and she spends it.

My wife does like the Stevia stuff, I’m partial to all natural sugar.

SweetLeaf Stevia drops. Not an artificial sweetener. I like vanilla flavor. Use it in coffee, maybe a few drops on morning cereal.

If stevia drops are. not around, I prefer to use sugar than artificial sweeteners.

Try none. I have weaned myself off all sweeteners, sugar and artificial, and enjoy my drinks more. My main drink is plain water. Then tea.

Stevia is the healthiest option. You must find a brand with little aftertaste. Even with a good brand, if you use too much, the aftertaste will overpower the sweetness.

NuNaturals was the best stevia. Then they lost their supplier. But that was a few years ago, and they have probably recovered by now.

Honey is often adulterated.

Sugar...pure cane sugar.

No High Fructose Corn Syrup whatsoever. Lost 20 lbs once I got rid of it and stayed with pure cane sugar

“Honey is often adulterated.”

And the Kentucky Fried Chicken “Honey Sauce” packettes

Only have 7% honey in them.

If you’re getting more than 10-15% of your carbs from sugar, that’s likely too much.

Talk to a dietician if you’re concerned, as every person is different, with varying consumption and usage (burn) rates. Random internet advice is worth exactly what you pay for it.

JMHO, YMMV

Almond flour, butter, erythritol makes a whole lot of yum.

Amen. I’ve been using saccharine for twenty years or more and have no complaint. I encountered stevia when I worked in Brazil/Paraguay. It’s much too sweet for my taste. Sorbitol gives me explosive runs.

Very good
I remember stamping 5lb bags of sugar .59 working in a grocery
Several years later I noticed the bags were 4lb.
(and the price higher of course)

I don’t have an answer to the question, but I would add that I once befriended a couple of Ph.D. chemists who worked in the field.

They confided (emphatically), that none of the artificial sweeteners are good for you. I have avoided them ever since.

If your pet dog or cat eats any food you have sweetened with xylitol there is a good chance it will die.

The government restricts sugar supply to keep the price higher, I’ve read

I tried stevia but to me it has a very clingy artificial taste and doesn’t satisfy, even when I grew it and used it green. Instead I have cut my sugar by using sucralose for sweet tea, with just enough brown sugar to provide the “umami” real sugar offers.

Agave nectar also works- you use a lot less of it because unlike white sugar or the plain no-calorie sweeteners, it has a very pleasant flavor that provides a lot of satisfaction. It is sugar, as is honey, but it doesn’t cause spikes in blood sugar, its effects are more gradual.

Love honey but it’s still pure sugar.

But not refined and it does have medicinal benefits. Stay healthy. I use to be an RC and Hostess Ding Dong addict. I have changed my ways but have a ways to go :)

I use the stevia that Vitamin Shoppe carries. It’s called PLNT. There is no erythritol in it and I believe it’s organic.

Xylitol is excellent for teeth, kills dental plaque by gagging the bacteria and fortifies enamel. Buy the xylitol gum pieces in bags.
