I may be misunderstanding the difference.

National socialism is form of governing.

Isn’t nationalism just putting your nation’s interest first and having great love for it?

But no doubt, just the fact that his government was a National Socialist one compared to our republic, speaks volumes about the differences.

Thanks for the distinction.

National Socialism is a political ideology and governs more aspects of the peoples lives than a republic. Hitler detested what we call nationalism as the German people loved Germany under the Weimar Republic with Wilhelm at the center of the government. Hitler sought to have the National Socialist German Workers Party at the controls, without respect to national borders. In his mind, the party (and by extension, the State) was to be the center of the German citizens lives, eventually to all of European life and then to the world. He truly believed that his form of government would be widely accepted by all that learned of it.
