I believe it’s in reference to this:

The parable of the mustard seed is a story that Jesus told about a very small seed, the mustard seed, growing into a large tree that provides shelter for many birds. It is recorded in Matthew 13:31-32. The mustard seed is compared to the kingdom of heaven due to its small beginnings and expansive reach at maturity.

So “be the mustard seed” can be interpreted to mean start small and you can still accomplish great things OR it could mean if you start with a small amount of faith it will grow to be a deeper faith over time.
