These sort of Farnsworth reactors are terribly inefficient, and they only fuse a very tiny portion of their fuel source. When some of the atoms are fusing, they get very hot in the near vicinity of them, but there are so few that are fusing, the overall temperature of the whole thing does not become that great.
They make good neutron sources, but they use up far more energy than they produce.

My dad who was trained in electronics in the Army Air Force prided himself on being able to take apart our one and only particle accelerator and have it work (sometimes even better) after he put it back together. But he forcefully showed me not to go into the back when he’d short out the capacitor—a mini lightning bolt in our front room.

I believe he built a fusor not not a fusion nuclear reactor. A fusor gets some fusion reaction created by the energy put into the system but it is really a baby compared to the big toruses built for sustainable power.
