Conservative talk show host Doc Thompson killed by Amtrak train in Haltom City ^ | 2/6/19 | Sarah Sarder Claire Z. Cardona Loyd Brumfield

Talk show host Doc Thompson was killed by a train, of all things. I cannot explain this logic. Why would anyone jog along a railroad track of an active rail line? This is a tragedy, and he leaves behind a family at his home in Arkansas. RIP, Doc.

There is a old freight rail line that eventually turned into a steam train line and has been repurposed and is now running passenger service opening in the last few weeks (TEXRail)through this area.

There are portions where they run 70 mph and pass through gated intersections without using the horn. There is also a running trail a few feet from the track in places.

statistically it seems that Conservatives meet untoward ends with much more regularity that leftists.

I actually do no longer believe anything

This is just awful. He recently left Glenn Beck’s show to strike out on his own. I wasn’t a regular listener, but he was fun & interesting. Too, too sad.

“Why would anyone jog along a railroad track of an active rail line?”

Because people assume that they will hear or feel an oncoming train in plenty of time to get away from the tracks.

This is not always the case. An approaching train can be much quieter than you expect one to be. And if it is traveling at high speed you could be in a world of trouble.

It had to be suicide

I’m a jogger. It is impossible to run along train tracks, mainly because of the gaps in the ties. There are some nice rural routes, if you can find a rail line with nice flat shoulders on the sides - but its impossible to run on the tracks themselves.

Did he normally run along those tracks or was this the first time for him to be there?? It is strange place to run.

People seem to get stupid around trains, I don’t know why. Loads of folks killed by them here in NM, all different circumstances.

I guess if you are going to check out might as well go big

Perhaps he was wearing headphones. This sort of needless accident happens with regularity among pedestrians and joggers.

Those committing suicide have been known to walk on active tracks with headphones blaring. It happened outside of Northern Virginia back in the 90’s.

“Perhaps he was wearing headphones”

Man, the supposed most intelligent of the beasts, has risen to such a high level of intelligence that we completely remove one of our senses necessary for survival. What’s next, going for a jog with duct tape over our eyes?

Train horns are loud enough to be heard for miles and miles and miles.

Did he not hear it or did no horn sound?

Yes, and a week and a half ago one of the New Texrail trains hit a pedestrian on the tracks. And while they may claim to get that fast on some of the northern portions, I'd estimate most of it a 40 mph or less.

A Florida mechanic was finishing working on my car when he said, "Stick around, and meet a friend who kills an average of one person a month. Can you guess his line of work?"

I made a few guesses before he answered with, "He's an engineer with the East Coast Railroad". :-/

In Collierville, TN. where my ex wife and kids live, runs a very active Union Pacific (I believe) rail line...been there since before the Union Forces tore up sections during the Civil War.

Anywho...beside the old train depot is a viewing platform where you can stand just a few feet off the main line as the trains blow past. It is crazy how quiet and smooth the train is as it passes by blowing your hair in its wake.

With continuous welded rail, etc...trains are freaky quiet.

A guy I worked with said the train sneaked up on him. Alcohol was involved. He survived, but alcohol was still a problem.

Lots of the crossings in that area are ‘no horn’.

The new (one month old) train goes 70 mph along a running/biking trail and is quiet as hell. They also don’t blow the horn because it pisses off the houses that line the track.

The new train runs every twenty-forty minutes. Before January, there would be 3 trains/week on those tracks and they would loud ass, 30 mph freight/sight seeing trains. I was at a crossing with the windows down in my car and the train went by @ 50 mph and it quieter than a typical SUV going 1/2 as fast.

I thought he had a heart attack. Getting hit by the new train makes sense. He won’t be the last to die.

I’m not sure how someone could jog along railroad tracks due to the ties, but maybe he was walking or just close to the tracks. People who walk along tracks often don’t realize how suddenly a train can overtake them.

I wear ear buds all the time when walking, I can hear cars, tell if they are approaching or going away from me.
