"Disturbing" discovery: Giant hole found under Antarctica glacier
CBS News ^ | January 31, 2019 | Sarah Lynch Baldwin

Researchers say a massive cavity the size of two-thirds of Manhattan was found under a glacier in Antarctica. The pocket is a sign of "rapid decay" and just one of "several disturbing discoveries" made recently regarding the glacier, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory said in a news release Wednesday.

"[The size of] a cavity under a glacier plays an important role in melting," said Pietro Milillo of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. "As more heat and water get under the glacier, it melts faster."

The growing cavity sits in West Antarctica at the bottom of Thwaites Glacier, which is about as big as Florida and contains enough ice to contribute more than 2 feet to sea level rise, NASA said. It is growing at an "explosive" rate that surprised researchers conducting a study the agency led on the glacier.

What the hell is the Jet Propulsion Laboratory doing looking underneath glaciers? Don’t they have jets to propel or something? We could probably use some faster missiles to blow up China’s new aircraft carriers or something. Talk about mission creep.

A glacier the size of Florida, that when melted raises the sea level 2 feet. Just how tall is this glacier? By my rough calculations that glacier (provided that it is solid ice, though it apparently isn’t) would have to be about 65,755 square miles. About two thirds of the earth is covered by the oceans. It would take Florida, times about 2,000. Taking a 2 foot thick Florida times 2k means that the glacier must average 4,000 feet in height. Is that a world record in glacier thickness?

No sea level rise occurs from melting ice. Myths are everywhere

------------------------------------------

Sea level rises result from ice on land melting, and the water running into the ocean.

It can also happen if ice on land slides into the ocean. It is an easy concept to understand

There is an increase of deep quakes in the Southern Hemisphere.

No. Fairly reasonable thickness for Antarctica.

We only have 12 years left on the planet - who cares. (snark)

No! The globe is what is warming, not the atmosphere!

If it was just discovered how do they know the void is growing rapidly.

What ever happened to that giant hole in the ozone over Antarctica? I thought that was supposed to kill us all by now by sucking the atmosphere off the Earth.

It fell. Now its under a glacier.

Impossible. Al Gore told us that the polar caps were gone by 2015.

For something the size of Florida to add 2 feet of depth to cover 75% of the planet, it would need to be many miles high.

Is this the same hole found during BO’Bs rule over this Nation?

IIRC, a very large hole was found at that time. Thousands of bytes used in discussing the importance of that find.

Anyone wishing to find holes....just travel to DC and you’ve hit the jackpot...or, at least a hole in one.

p.s. I wanna go home.

Florida is 54,154 sq mi... the oceans cover 139,480,000 sq mi... so 2,575 Floridas are needed to cover the oceans... 2,575 Floridas that are 2 ft thick would require that glacier to be over 20 miles thick. The earth’s crust is only 25 miles thick in most places. In other words, once again, someone is giving out non-scientific data.

You are correct. Those baby killers are crawling out of that portal at a fast and furious pace.

Revising my thwaites glacier height average to 6,000 feet since the story exaggerated the size. It’s not about the size of Florida. It is almost a third smaller in square miles.

Not very likely. The molten interior of the earth has always had only one thermal destiny ... gradual cooling until it finally burns all of its fuel and goes entirely cold.
