We know that GEOTUS games out all ossibilities before taking action, and other than drawing a red line and showing resolve, what was REALLY accomplished by stretching the shutdown as long as he did?
Predictably, it was an endless stream of doom, doom, doom, end of the universe etc etc etc.
Could it be that GEOTUS was using this as a dry run or proxy for testing reaction of normies when faced with a distressing situation? Probing how normies will react when pain comes?

POTUS used this as a wedge issue to create dissension in the DEM ranks. AOC Krazies vs the rest.
He also showed up how Congress vacations, and fiddles around instead of staying in town and working on fixing problems.
This also stopped or made difficult their smuggling and kick-backs from this.
Provided a good opportunity to stop CODEL to Afg. Brussels and Europe/NATO. That’s part of the DERPs system that they likely cannot talk to without NASA getting it all.

That’s all I can think of off hand. As to the WALL?? The funding for that was included in the first omnibus bill - the one that POTUS said was awful, and he didn’t ever want such a monstrosity again-it funded the military through 2019.
Our discussions and digs revealed that particular type of bill can have money moved around and that the Corp of Engineers will be involved. Prototypes and Proposals were submitted.
The Corp has already given out Contracts, and the building, repair/replacement has already been taking place. We’ve been watching the movie on TV and LSM.
