Two patients have died after contracting a fungal infection caused by pigeon droppings at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said an elderly patient died but from an unrelated cause.
Another infected patient has also died but the factors contributing to the death are still being investigated. A non-public room, thought to contain machinery, was identified as a likely source. An investigation is under way.
A NHSGGC spokesman said: "Our thoughts are with the families at this distressing time.
"Due to patient confidentiality we cannot share further details of the two cases.
"The organism is harmless to the vast majority of people and rarely causes disease in humans."

Dropping pigeons can be fatal?
Dang.
Or possibly Histoplasmosis.

16 months ago my son went into the hospital because ( they thought) he had double pneumonia and antibiotics did nothing for it. It was a severe inflammation of the lungs. After numerous tissue samples were sent to labs around the country nobody could identify it.
They asked him a million questions in an attempt to figure out what was happening. Like many homeowners, he had bats that sometimes lived in the garage and dropped batcrap. The spores from that can be deadly to some.
Another one that really got their attention was that his dog had caught a rabbit and ate a bunch of it before ralphing it up on the floor. He cleaned it up. They said inhaling the spores from bunny fur can be fatal to some.
Most people are not affected by any of this but to some people it can be fatal quickly.
Sometimes the only cure is to sever the affected limb.
Wow...so they finally identified it and found the right antibiotics?
And “House.”

Yes and no. Since then he has spent 249 days in the hospital, six times in the ICU, twice on life support, collapsed lungs, massive internal bleeding, found a brain tumor six months ago.
They think he has a rare form of a rare autoimmune disease.
They don’t know how he made it through all that.
He will be in the medical journals as patient Male/34.
He hadn’t been to a doctor of any kind since high school when he had to get physicals for sports.
So sorry to hear about your son’s health problems and your family anguish. What a horrible ordeal to go through. I hope it all works out for you and your son. What a nightmare.
Does that include the head?
It has stumped many, many doctors. I remember one day last winter 18 doctors from various departments came into his room during the day and they were going to have a conference call with more. Lung tissue samples were sent numerous times to labs all over the country. none could identify it.
Twice while in the hospital he got an additional pneumonia.
It was easily identified and treated.
I remember one oncologist who is nationally renowned, thirty years in the business, an expert if there ever was one, and she told me she did every test she could think of and still didn’t know what this inflammation was or what caused it.
Finally the head of the hematology department came up with a working diagnosis of an autoimmune disease where the body basically goes into hyperdrive and attacks itself. Massive doses of steroids put the flame out. After that, whenever an episode would start they knew what to throw at it and what to watch for..
Only if you’re a Democrat.
They need to get a copy of this story. The Kroger I go to had the same until I complained to higher ups.
