Can an iPad Replace My Laptop or Desktop Computer?
Lifewire ^ | Jan 2 2019 | Daniel Nations

Did you know the iPad Pro is more powerful than the entry-level laptops lining the shelves at Best Buy? The iPad earns that "Pro" name with a processor that is on par with a mid-level PC. This is in addition to a screen resolution that exceeds many of those same laptops and the graphics power of an XBOX 360. And when you combine this with an operating system that supports slide-over and split-screen multitasking and a virtual touchpad, it's about time to reevaluate the iPad as a laptop killer.

Yup. I remember when we were allocated money to get an HP 9820 desktop calculator. Had 4K ram. We were thrilled. We could write very short programs and do things that would have taken weeks in the que for the big computers to do

I neither wanted or needed one,but my kids chipped in and INSISTED that I would love it.

Also,other years,INSISTED that I would like a new TV,Netflix,Amazon Prime,and an IPod touch-—so they pitched in.

They were right in all cases-——:-)

Funny you should say that. A former co worker of mine was fired for cracking the monitor of a pc. She had anger management issues.

I was happy to see her leave.

Not sure about an IPAD Pro replacing a laptop or desktop but a Surface Pro definitely could....It has a USB drive, connection for Monitor, projector etc...
It runs desktop software so there should be no limitations...I have the surface pro 3 and use it more than, and prefer it more than my desktop using it for work and pleasure.

In my opinion the answer is a resounding no. I had the same plan a couple of years ago when we retired and planned to go RV-ing. I discovered that the ipad is easy to use and entertaining bit it is almost totally a consumer if info, ie, internet surfing, buying stuff on line, etc.

I find it to be too slow and awkward to be productive

My laptop is the base for my home theater system (file server and 5 TVs) that has 18 yrs of tweaking and tuning on Linux so it’s software is irreplaceable. My iphone is portable but boring.

Thanks-—it will suit me because I am totally unproductive. :-)

>>I find the iPhone has plenty of power for a compact hanheld computer.

It does but I wouldn’t write a book, article, or legal document on it.

I wouldn’t do photo retouching for print exhibition or print advertising (even for a local concert or yardsale) on it.

I wouldn’t do spreadsheet calculations on my phone.

etc.

So if someone doesn’t use their computer to do their job (daytime or outside income), a phone may give them all the computing power they need (calculator, internet, stock quotes, weather forecast, limited movie viewing, games, and communication).

I will say that tablets and pads are all that some jobs need. Mobile point of sale interface, data collection on a job site, etc.

A low cost solution for certain tasks.

We got rid of our ipad. I don’t care how much they soup them up with, no usb it is limited. Happy with a desktop and keyboard for big jobs, Lenovo Yoga laptop with touchscreen, (love Lenovo, my second one and hubby has one too.) Then I have a kindle for bedtime podcast listening or checking on things if I wake up at night. Smartphone screens are just too small. On my second kindle too. Great size and does what I need.

iPad, huh ...

How many USB ports does it have? How big (inches, not pixels) is its monitor? How much internal data storage does it have? Physical keyboard? Physical mouse/trackball? Multiple monitors?

I run customized software that has to propagate all of the active satellites contained in the JFSCC catalog from which I can then perform link budget analysis runs on a variety of satellites that can require hundreds of billions of calculations to derive the analytical results needed to answer specific questions from my customer so I’m sticking to my original answer of no. Cheers!

Processing power isn’t even an an issue, it’s all about ergonomics. If you are say a programmer, tapping out your code with a virtual keyboard on a small screen will get real old real fast.
