This World War I Footage Was Smoothed and Colorized. And it’s Amazing.
Popular Mechanics ^ | December 17, 2018 | Peter Martin

It’s been 100 years since World War I ended. To mark the occasion, director Peter Jackson took hundreds of hours of battlefield footage from the Imperial War Museum in London, updated it, and turned it into a moving documentary, They Shall Not Grow Old.

Since none of the footage had sound, Jackson’s production company, Park Road Post Production, in New Zealand, added it in. “We wanted the full gamut of sounds,” Jackson says. “From the wind in the trees to footsteps in the mud to the jangle of the equipment to the click-clack of the rifle bolts to the horse hooves and the squeak of the leather. Subtleties upon subtleties.”

War movies can’t capture that real 1,000 yard stare.

I wonder how long before some idiot demands they remove the cigarettes from the images.

They also did a lot to get the speed to look more natural.

If my grandfather had been thirty feet upwind, he would have been buried in France with his fellow soldiers, never returned to America and these sentiments would have never been thought or written. Wonder how many never came to exist due to the insanity from 1914-1945.

It makes me almost forgive him for what he did to The Hobbit.

I wish this was playing at a theater near me - there is one showing this week in Saratoga, but it appears to be completely sold out.

Looks like I'll need to wait for the Blu-Ray.

I watched “Apocalypse World War I” on the AHC Channel. It was a multi-part series that chronicled WWI from the beginning to the Armistice and was very good. I learned a so much I didn’t know. They used a lot of film footage — some of it was colorized. Not sure if it is available to watch online, but AHC might rerun it.

I physically go to the movies about once a decade, but I already have my ticket to the 3-D showing of this next week.

I viewed it last night. It is colorized and 3D which creates an amazing visual experience. But it is how these effects lend themselves to the humanization of the soldiers and resulting audience empathy which goes way beyond any bland historical understanding of WWI. My Dad served in France during that war, an important life experience about which he said little except to others with whom he had served.

I can’t recommend this highly enough - buy your tickets for the showing on the 27th now.

Absolutely a must to see it in 3D. The conversions were done with great skill and subtlety. At times you will feel like you are on the Western front yourself.

We went and watched this last night also. It was spectacular what was done with the old footage. It is a shame that only one more showing is scheduled in select theaters on December 27. It is also very surprising that we noticed no leftist political points trying to be made.

My grandfather also served in France. He and a buddy got separated from the unit and wandered around a while hungry. Finally found some sort of root cellar in an embankment and some canned tomatoes. He said he never cared for canned tomatoes but was never so happy to have them then right then and always would eat them after that.

He earned a purple heart. Also said his buddy actually got the worst of it. I have the framed commemorative award and the medal that was issued later when they officially awarded that medal after the fact.

My son who was with me last night said the very same thing!
