Maison Hullibarger’s father tells the Detroit Free Press that he asked the priest to stop talking during the Dec. 8 funeral Mass. But Jeff Hullibarger says the Rev. Don LaCuesta continued giving a critical sermon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Temperance.
Hullibarger says some mourners left the church crying.
The archdiocese released a statement Thursday saying it’s sorry that an “unbearable situation was made even more difficult.” The archdiocese says LaCuesta will not preach at funerals “for the foreseeable future.”

Keep in mind that nobody knows the disposition of his soul at death, and nobody knows his eternal destiny. Only God can judge, in the particular case, whether the suicider was drunk, or crazy, or clinically depressed or otherwise out of his right mind.
But according to the Bible, we (our bodies) are to be treated reverentially, because our lives do not belong to us but to God. We say this every time we say the Creed: the Holy Spirit is the Lord and Giver of Life.
We do not have right to kill ourselves. If we do so with an adequate degree of self-awareness (i.e. not reacting to a drug, not paranoid schizophrenic, etc.) it is self-murder and as culpable as any other murder.
Galatians 5: 21 - no murderers will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
Envyings, murders, drunken revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Unless, of course, such a murderer should repent.
The worst thing about self-murder is that you are cutting short your chance to repent. Such persons are in desperate peril of their souls.
We should all pray both for the dead boy and for his family.
The kid was a decent football player and the father asked the priest to stop...You asked him to stop, Now you cold cock the priest, quit that church and grieve for your son . P.s. funerals arent like McDonald’s.. you have to plan them, didnt they talk to the priest before they asked for a church funeral? How is suicide a rejection of Christ? Suicide is a rejection of self.
When God promised, “shall not perish but have everlasting life”, to those who “ believeth on Him” there were no exceptions. Any exceptions are putting words in God’s mouth and are rejecting Him.
Doibtful that God appreciates embellishing on His Word.

It’s very sad that there are people who don’t know their eternal destiny. It is possible to know. I know with 100% certainty my destiny.

The person has rejected the life of Christ and their faith in Christ that their life will be well. Instead, they only see doom. No faith.

He could have said the boy was much loved on this earth, "And therefore we must all trust in God's mercy 'especially for those in most need of Thy mercy', as the traditional prayer says --- and pray for his purification and redemption."
Anything less than proclaiming "he is right now ecstatic and glorious in the presence of God" may have upset some of the congregation, who were understandably upset anyway.
But saying anything that implies "He's better off" causes suicide copycats: a big, BIG problem, especially for adolescents and young adults.
That cannot be assumed in every case. The whole "physician assisted suicide" movement -- a truly homicidal ideology --- assumes the opposite: that a significant number of people will suicide with full knowledge and consent.
And as researchers understand, many many suicides, particularly youth suicides, inspire copycats. It doesn't have to be psychosis. It could just be a youthful moodiness, sophomoric sentimentaliosm, or even a romantic idealization of the tragic individual who was "too good for this cruel world."

Really? Evangelicals don’t believe suicide is a sin? It’s one of the worst in my religion.
Sometimes the truth is unpleasant.
While that may be "solid" Roman Catholic teaching it is not what is promised by Christ in the New Testament.
We have the promises of Christ in the New Testament that give us the assurance of our salvation.

Frankly, I’m surprised the priest even allowed a mass for the young man. I don’t know if the reference to heaven was in the sermon or the homily and what the context was.
This school has taken some real hits over the past couple of years. One of the football players died of cancer 2 years ago, it was a prolonged illness. His final wish was to go to the Super Bowl but he was too sick to travel. Make-A-Wish and a regional retailer donated a scoreboard to the school in his honor.
Temperance is a small community where the football teams’s “trademark” is “family”. The coach has a pretty decent record and has managed to turn out some good teams without a lot of “talent”.
According to a local report, the family met with the priest and discussed the content of the homily. They maintain the priest acted maliciously and now want the priest not only removed from the parish, but removed as a priest.
They are saying the priest ruined the funeral by his mentioning “suicide” multiple times and not allowing the family an opportunity to speak. They told the priest he was not welcome at the graveside services.
This suicide has been tough on the community. The cost in lives being ruined/affected is growing daily.
The deceased persons' fave songs, whether it's "NaNa NaaNaaa, Hey Hey" or "Danny Boy", are not part of the Liturgy.
Nor does the Funeral Mass belong to the parents. It is a formal liturgical act wherein the Church offers the Holy Sacrifice and prays for a merciful judgment and the repose of the soul. It is not to be an avenue of personal heartfelt sentiment, even the finest.
And no "instant canonization."
There are other places for eulogies. At the funeral home. At the graveside. At the post-funeral dinner. At a separate memorial service. Perfectly appropriate and maybe even needed, there.
Please. Do it all.
But not at the Liturgy. It is the formal prayer of the Church.
What a cold, unforgiving, uncaring religion Roman Catholicism is that at this family's darkest moment a Roman Catholic priest kicks them in the spiritual gut.
The position espoused by this idiot priest and you is a bold face, contradictory, and false Roman Catholic teaching when compared to the PROMISES OF CHRIST found in the New Testament.
