Priest criticizes teen who killed himself at funeral

Maison Hullibarger’s father tells the Detroit Free Press that he asked the priest to stop talking during the Dec. 8 funeral Mass. But Jeff Hullibarger says the Rev. Don LaCuesta continued giving a critical sermon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Temperance.

Hullibarger says some mourners left the church crying.

The archdiocese released a statement Thursday saying it’s sorry that an “unbearable situation was made even more difficult.” The archdiocese says LaCuesta will not preach at funerals “for the foreseeable future.”

Only a bereaved parent could understand. I lost my daughter and only child. I would have done the same thing if our minister had said that. Some things you don’t ever say to a parent who has lost a child — at any age; for any reason.

The family is claiming a lot.

It’s their words against his, but to demand the removal of the priest because he did something they didn’t like, smacks of a very self-centered situation.

Unless the priest was demonstratively wrong, the family is not behaving in a way that is honorable.

If the priest allows it, I think it’s more appropriate at the cemetery

Do you allow people living in open adultery (or even polygamy) to Holy Communion?

YOUR denomination is allowing known homosexual priests to continue to be priests and to "hear confession, forgive sins, perform the Mass, etc,".

In my church every person who follows Christ is allowed Communion....in other words....sinners are allowed Communion.

I would imagine at your local church the priest is not asking each person if they've sinned before partaking of Communion....or maybe they do.

Did you forget that in David’s case Bethsheba’s husband was dead?

Murdered by David.

How would your church handle a situation where someone had an affair with a woman, murdered her husband, and then married her?

It’s sad that in your relentless Javier-like pursuit of “The Roman Religion” you come very close to giving aid and comfort to the act of suicide.

Nope.

Suicide is indeed wrong....however, once the person has committed suicide there is nothing one can do to address the issued with that person.

>>"That's right...stand up and defend your priest....might as well be defending the homosexual predators in Roman Catholicism."<<

It's so easy to see right through this cheap rhetorical tactic.

I assure you it is neither cheap nor rhetorical. It is the truth.

You are defending your Roman Catholic priest in this issue.

Pray for the self-slain boy,...

We can pray for his family. Praying for the deceased does not and cannot change their eternal destination.

And while you're at it, pray for the predator priest.

I'll pray that Roman Catholicism musters the courage to deal with this issue and get these predators out of the priesthood and that they come to a saving faith in Christ.

We should also be praying for the surviving members of the family. Their lives for forever changed by this tragic event.

You who are the soul of mercy.

You don't see me telling the family their son was a sinner who isn't going to Heaven....that's your denomination.

Recently had a similar experience at my cousin’s funeral. She was not an active member in any church, but had done many things for the community including helping to set up a scholarship fund for needy students. The preacher said he just didn’t know whether she was in heaven or hell, but said that the mourners better wake up so they didn’t end up damned for eternity. Not exactly a comforting message and no mention about God’s infinite mercy for those who believe.

Please be sure you correctly attribute my quotes to me and not others.

I didn't write the first paragraph.

I will take credit for the second though.

Don’t know the family. But since CNN picked up the story, it’s been brutal on social media. Sometimes it better to just not say anything rather than to go to the media for relief.

I feel for the family. All this media hype is doing is compounding the loss.

Eulogies are not permitted at Catholic Mass. The coach needs to be beaten with a bag of door knobs.

LaCuesta twas the priest who tried to keep Maison’s parents from eulogizing their son, and i do not see where the coach was trying to give a eulogy.

As for eulogies not being permitted at Catholic funeral Masses, that is what the Order of Christian Funerals says (OCF # 27; cf. CCC 1688) yet "A member or a friend of the family may speak in remembrance of the deceased before the final commendation begins.” (OCF # 170). But the force of these is manifested by how the hierarchy practices it, and guess who gave a eulogy at Teddy K's Catholic Funeral?

Murder in order to enter into matrimony is an impediment to marriage. But Adultery only applies while Uriah was alive.

It should be noted there, a canonical impediment does not mean that it a further is entirely impossible. Even excommunication can be lifted in the Catholic Church if a person sincerely repents. And in David’s Case a careful dispensation would have to be considered for the canonical impediment.

The case of Bersheba would be a major question. But adultery after Uriah is dead is no longer the issue. Which is a divine obstacle.

Jesus teaches that the Marriage bond ends at death. (Luke 20:23-33)

...to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh...

Yeah, right or wrong on the issue of suicide, it was a cheap shot at the wrong time...

The Priest's high level of cruelty and pride is unacceptable in the eyes of God... a real 'priest' whould know that...

From what I've seen from Roman Catholic posts on this topic it isn't considered adultery if the couple isn't have sex.

Jesus teaches that the Marriage bond ends at death. (Luke 20:23-33)

I have seen some Roman Catholics take the position that even then you cannot remarry without it being adultery.

hmmm...

"Your response is not fitting or correct. First, you can only presume

"And presuming the person was rational, morally cognizant and culpable for his actions, then committing suicide is a terminal denial of saving faith, though in some rare cases it may be out of a longing to be with their Lord and Savior.

So, are you for presuming or against??

Depends on who you talk to and what kind of day they are having, what kind of answer you’ll get.
